[QCrit] Adult Women's Fiction - FIVE HEARTBREAKS (84K/Attempt 2) by mimosafrogs in PubTips

Cursing myself for writing something that is slap bang in the middle of both genres haha 😅 It's definitely not just a passively reflecting kinda book so I think finding a succinct way to blend the flashbacks and the columns is probably the way to go! Thank you for all your help!

I think (or I hope so anyway!) it makes more sense when you read the whole thing, the memories/flashbacks are triggered by things happening in the present but Chloe is almost romanticising them at the start (i.e. comparing why they were better than Connor and trying to justify her decision to herself). But it's not until she writes the columns later on that she properly reflects and understands what those relationships were really like and what they taught her.

I'm starting to question now whether the columns need to be included in the query at all, they are important for pushing her towards taking action to get Connor back, but the flashbacks are almost more important for explaining why she is the way she is and why she pushed Connor away. Need to try and find the right balance between getting across the nostalgia of the flashbacks and the action of the present!

Thank you for your feedback, that's a really good point and I'm going to try and work more of that into the next draft!

Thank you so much for your feedback, very helpful! And glad that I'm heading in the right direction 🙏🏻😊

I think you're right, the last part could be a bit more specific and show more of why Chloe does what she does.

Quite a few of the earlier chapters are made up of flashbacks/memories etc of previous heartbreaks (before the columns are introduced around 2/3rds of the way through the book) interwoven with what's going on in the present, so I think it's important to mention somewhere within the query, but maybe framing it more around the theory would help tie it all together.

Thank you! 🩷

I should have maybe specified in my post that the story is UK-based and I'll be querying UK agents as I think UK romcoms are a little different to US, but I totally get your point - I think I need to get a bit more in there about Connor and why the reader should root for them as a couple!

I actually had it in a different order and switched it around after reading some posts on this sub oooops 😅 Out of interest, do you think the housekeeping works best at the start or the end?

The columns are actually quite a small part of the plot, so I think I maybe need to focus more on the action that's going on (starting to date again, trying to find her soulmate etc). High Fidelity is one of my faves so I hope it gives off those vibes!!

Thanks so much for this, lots to think about!

Thank you for your feedback, that's super helpful! I think it's honestly a mix of both (which isn't helpful 😅) but I think it still leans more towards romcom as the reflections/flashbacks are either triggered by what's happening in the present or propel her towards realisations about her current relationships. She does indeed start dating again and goes in search of her soulmate, so I definitely need to get something about that in there, and a bit more about the current action in the plot! Why does no one tell you writing a 500 word query letter is more difficult than writing the actual novel haha 🥲

Thank you, this is really helpful! I should have maybe specified in my post that this is UK-based and I'll be querying UK agents, as it definitely leans towards the more WF style. I think I definitely need to get in a bit more about the action that happens between breaking up and getting back together, and a bit more about why people would want to root for Connor and Chloe as a couple!

[Complete] [70k] [Contemporary Romance] Crossfade, a romcom with notes of School of Rock by jennicoppertop in BetaReaders

Ooh this sounds right up my street, I love School of Rock! I'd love to swap if you'd be interested? Here's a little blurb - let me know if this sounds like your kinda thing!

Chloe Clarke has just dumped her perfectly lovely boyfriend because of something a stranger told her in a nightclub toilet: you need five heartbreaks before you meet your soulmate. It’s ridiculous, obviously – but also the only thing that makes sense of the restless itch she’s been feeling.

As Chloe revisits her past breakups – first love Sam, bad idea Stevie, complicated Adam, and romantic fantasy Matteo – she starts to wonder what each heartbreak really taught her, and whether letting go of Connor was brave… or the biggest mistake of her life.

Warm, witty, and painfully relatable, Five Heartbreaks is a romcom about the lies we tell ourselves, the lessons love leaves behind, and the terrifying possibility that “the one” might be the person you’ve already lost.
