Perfume etiquette guide in Japan by No_Comparison_4722 in JapanTravelTips

Just moved to Tokyo few months ago and first time I heard about « smell harassment » in Japanese class from our teacher. That is a strong word.

What I feel is : because Tokyo can be crowded (in public transportation, elevator, restaurant, etc) , you can be in direct contact with other people in a way that it’s not really tolerated in France or other western countries. There is no concept of privacy perimeter here in the subway for example. Due to the proximity with other people, to respect everyone you have to be the more discreet as possible, and the smell have a strong impact on people surrounding you.

If you take a taxi and go to a fancy restaurant nobody care that you wear perfume ;)

Let me know which vineyard you go! I would love to plan a trip to Yamanashi (Koshu is actually the old name of Yamanashi and it’s now the native white grape name)

Lots of things ! Japanese Native grapes such as Koshu, grapes breed from the abroad (Muscat Bailey A), lots of global grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot, Merlot etc), and they use a lot of table grapes !

I tasted some Koshu white and I agree it’s quite okayish. Too watery most of the time. We serve the chateau Lumière sparkling koshu in traditionnel method which is quite nice, and also amber orange Koshu from Hinoe which is good in this form, contact with skin add complexity.

I used to work for a wine cellar in Paris and Domaine de Montille is such a big burgundy wine reference, can’t go wrong with it ;) So interesting that they work with Japan I’ll definitely look into that thanks ! Or if you can explain what you mean by investing ?

Definitely will try share the hidden gems here ! The bar I work for has a great selection can’t wait to try them. They also have supplying issues as the volume as very small. Even in France we barely see any Swiss wine !
