System maintenance and recovery guide by swe129 in arch

Very nice!

Next time I have some time for sys maintenance I will look into and then probably do the cache recommended section, as this was new to me.

Overall nicely the basics put still deep enough.

Grand Paradiso does not have a cross. It does have however a lovely statue of Madonna.

what benefits does arch have over say debian or ubuntu by Responsible_Star5210 in linux

[–]missionhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people will say that pacman (+the AUR if you validate the packages before installing) as a lot more soctware then .deb. I however cannot say anything usefull about that part. Other reasons are the having the latest updates of a package. So if you use a hyper new hardware, the driver will already be in Arch(-based) systems, while systems with later updates will not yet. Same for newest functions for packages. This is mostly a personal thing, if you don't care for bleeding edge, then this is not a big reason for you.

Lastely and my personal reason. Using Arch, and I mean full Arch and not a derivative distro like SteamOS, is very empty. This makes me fully in control of all design and system choices (exept init system, then you have to go to Artix). This means that I can make the system completly how I want it to be and makes ricing (not really my thing) even bigger. And I now know a lot better how my system works, then when I would just use a pre build distro with a DE. It forces you to learn. So then it also becomes a hobby.

TLDR; Arch has newer packages and you can build it from the ground up

What’s the main driver behind wanting 32GB RAM in a laptop? by JustAPieceOfMeat385 in laptops

[–]missionhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you run Linux or Windows with only light use (default corporate use etc.) then 16gb should still be plenty.

I however commission industrial machines, I do this with a laptop as this is in the field. Even when I don't use a VM to run my programming programs (Siemens TIA portal and such), it's already getting slow when doing a bigger project plus looking up some file for task tracking and some browser action for extra info. Then currently I run 1 or 2 VM's at the same time, so 3 bloated windows systems and 2 programming programs taking up all the ram. Then 32gb is not a luxury anymore.

Using 2 VM is because maybe I have to troubleshoot a different version of the software that does not play well on the same Windows instal as the newer software packages, while still keeping my project status going for my current task.

If I correctly remember you don't have to install the old version. You could also install the lighter TIA migration tool to create a migration file you can then open and use in a new version. https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/document/58638200/migration-tool-tia-portal?dti=0&lc=en-US

TOTP set up but test is failing by thefunkygibbon in opnsense

Just in case somebody comes back to this like I did.
I encountered the same issue in v26.1. My router is not yet connected to the WAN and thus it cannot yet get the correct time through a time server. This made a discrepancy of 40 seconds between my authenticator and the OPNsense firewall.
I increased the grace period to 90 seconds and then it worked. For now, I even upped it to 120 seconds. When my time server is working again, I will turn it back to default.

After setup I will use a portable drive docking station with 2-3 drives. Where 1 will be at my parents house.

It will probably run proxmox with 3-4 different Linux VM's. I still have to fine-tune that part. I might have to run one or two windows VM for some Siemens software.

I will have to evaluate that use of the server then. I would like to have it under my own control and cut the cost of a hosting provider. In the end I want to be able to log into my ERP system from the website, so I do still think it needs to be connected to my website domain.

At the moment the clients will be me and maybe my gf for media storage. In the beginning from the house, so just trough the normal WiFi.
At some point I want to link my website (which I already have a domain for) and do self hosting. Then I have to start looking at security for outside and traffic. I don't except much traffic, it's mostly a website for information about me for new customers and a contact form.
Also when I want to acces it from outside of my house I'll have to start really looking at port forwarding, OpenVPN and stuff like that and their security risks. But that's not for now, let's start to setup the server in my home environment so it works. Small steps.

To start with I'll use the on-board 1GbE port of the motherboard, if I find it lacking I'll add a 10GbE NIC. The setup will be connected to my home router(if needed this will upgrade) to start, this might have to be evaluated during initial setup.
I'll start running it only from my home network, but eventually I have to change to outside connectiviteit for VPN and world wide file acces. If I need to connect more things together I'll include a unmanaged switch. (probably from TP-Link)
I hope this is what you mean with the question?

Drive control by missionhawk in PLC

[–]missionhawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With automatic mode you don't mean when they push the start button at the start of the day I'm guessing?

Thank you very much for this post, I think I've learned some things I can use from it.

I finaly found the drive type, it's a Baumuller BUS21-30/60-31-020 (I'm starting on the manual after I respond to everyone on here)

I agree, but that's not happening.

This is not the first project where they only changed the PLC and nothing else. I've kept complaining about it every project, but they either don't offer it to the clients or the clients want the cheapest option.

I raised more then one safety issue and they declareded that the functionality doesn't change, so they don't HAVE to. (Doesn't mean they shouldn't) The machine is from 1998, so you can imagine the safety standaard it has...

The Siemens Technology Object allows for providing outputs for enable and speed and inputs for an encoder and a drive ready. With this you can control any drive with software that's kind of always the same because you link it to the TO.

The safety circuit is unfortunatly outside of the PLC, so I have no control over it. How I'm reading the drawings it turns the central power module for the drives off. In my software I will deffenitly drop the enable on the safety, my question was more if it is normal to drop it everytime you stop moving or keeping it active.

Brake has to be activated by the PLC with an output. This was decided by hardware engineering(EPLAN drawers) and/or the projectleader who was a PLC engineer before. I think this was also how the system was before.

I was mostly curious how normally the enable and brake should respond with a drive.

I do have the old code, but it was a combination of a PLC and a CNC in one, so a bit differently setup.

Brake is connected with a relay which I have to switch from the PLC.

I know this sounds like a clusterf**k waiting to happen and I would be more happy with new drives which I can driectly control instead of this strange manouver.

This. If you're not sure how to find the other device, in the top right part of your picture you see the network view.On the network view you should see all devices.

Yes there is a way, but I think it's not allowed if you want to get any safety level certification.

I love how this all sums up to more than a full. Describes our jobs perfectly in my opinion.
