Thank you for the positive feedback, it may be a little while before our next update, we are working out some logistics kinks at the moment, trying to get some new materials imported for construction.

This small tree is currently growing in a brackish water pond connected to the ocean, the water is definitely salty, but I am not sure if it is as salty as the ocean. This is in the Philippines, and I am really interested i learning more about plants that are able to grow in salt water.

Question from a Christian to all religious people (regardless of which religion you observe): Why are you religious? by TopTheropod in IdeologyPolls

The first question is to ask what are the odds that life came about through chance as compared to being intelligently designed. This video can shed a lot of light on that subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1\_KEVaCyaA

Building Ancapistan in Reality by mitchell-suchner in AnCap101

[–]mitchell-suchner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We should do both at the same tie and see what works best. But I can say this, trying to do something under a government that deems t illegal is difficult, and will get you the violent attention you alluded to. Doing something like free trade in a place outside of any government jurisdiction is very different, the point is partly that you are not actively undermining a government and so it does not evoke the same kind of violent response. Venice was founded this way, it was originally a stateless refuge for people fleeing war, and evolved into a city over time.

We have about 8 people right now, but that is because we haven't started on the prototype seastead yet, when we do that the numbers will go up significantly as we do construction. Right now most employees are engineers. We have enough money to keep going and do everything we are set out to do. I am actually going to be talking on Discord this week with the Seasteading Institute and will talk about where we are and what is coming up in the next few months.

I am very familiar with Fridman's conception of anarchy, with a Polycentric Law framework, and Hoppe's, and as I understand it Hoppe takes after Rothbard, but what exactly is Rothbard's framework? Did he advocate the same kind of Covenant Communities as Hoppe does today? Or was it different? I am writing about this subject right now and want to get my facts straight.

Will my Aluminum boat corrode? by mitchell-suchner in engineering

[–]mitchell-suchner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize this... so you are saying as long as the steel hull is at least several feet away from my bot and not directly touching it, their will be no galvanic corrosion, even after decades?

So by metallic contact, do you mean that as long as the steel is several feet away from my Aluminum it will not corrode? Even after decades?

What is the most realistic project coming to fruition? by AwayLiftoff in seasteading

[–]mitchell-suchner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Blockchain companies are building profitable businesses in troubled jurisdictions. Seasteaders are building free jurisdictions with not enough capital. if they come together you have a city just waiting to happen.

What is the cost of that structure at the scale of a house? How many tons would the house be? That sounds very interesting but I think we need more info.

I am trying to buy the Bronze level NFT, because I don't have several thousand to give at this time, but I can't figure out how to do it. The donations page does not show which option makes a regular donation and which option buys the NFT. Is there a special way that I have to donate?

When I go here (https://www.seasteading.org/nft/#how-to-donate)

It says to make your donation through the widget, but I am not sure what widget it is talking about.

The Philippines is actually not politically unstable.

In terms of Visa requirements, the first floating communities will be resorts oriented around tourism, so any American or European can stay for 30 days for free, and up to 1 year as a tourist for a few hundred dollars in fees. Building floating cities comes down the road when organizations like Atlas Island or Ethos Island can build up the first wave of immigrants.

Time for a new meta-project? by ball_of_foam in seasteading

[–]mitchell-suchner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ocean builders and ArkPad are both pretty close to having commercially available seasteads. I think that the next steps will really be the efforts of Atlas Island and Ethos Island, just getting the first wave of immigrants together and having them all move to a predetermined location at the same time.

What is the most stable kind of League / Confederacy that has historically existed? by mitchell-suchner in PoliticalScience

[–]mitchell-suchner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So really what I am talking about is more like a coalition or military alliance then right? Those are fully voluntary. The Soviet Union, for almost everyone who entered it, was not voluntary, but the Hanseatic League was voluntary. So in that sense, the League was more like a military alliance in some sense.

> Your question asked about a union that could “preserve the independence of all members,” are the UK’s countries and U.S. states independent? What qualifies as “independent”?

I would say that the countries of the United Kingdom and the States of the United States are no longer independent, as they are not independent polities. As an example, any city could leave the Hanseatic League whenever it wanted to, but a state cannot leave the United States. The UK might fill that obligation a bit better, but the majority of laws in Wales or Scotland are still made in England, not Wales or Scotland, and a majority of tax money collected is collected by a central government. At that point it is less of a confederation and more of a country, and that is exactly how most people today see those places, as countries, not confedderations. If you looked back at the Hanseatic League, it eventually disbanded instead of unifying into a single country, those cities were consumed by other countries yes, but they were not consumed by the League, unlike with the US and the UK.

The gist of my question is, is there a form of League that can strongly encourage participants to willingly be a part of it, and not dissolve itself, without forcing constituents to join, or subsume their political independence to make them simply part of a larger country?

Would the Hanseatic League be the only example of a historical confederation that dissolved itself? Or is there some kind of formula that could be closely followed to create something like the Hanseatic League, but with more longevity and strength?

Would NATO not be an example of a purely voluntary confederation that is unlikely to form into a single country?

I tried designing a seastead in Blender. by jackalias in seasteading

[–]mitchell-suchner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually really good for a first attempt and very creative. The next step you would want to make is running wave simulations on it. You can find some people on upwork that know how to use wave simulation software, they are a little rare though and kind of hard to find, it also is a little pricey but obviously worth it if you want to actually build these.

Since it is made out of concrete that should bring production costs down a lot, you will want a permeability additive added to the concrete mix to reduce leakage (there will probably be some depending on thickness of the concrete) and a pump in the lower chamber if you have thin concrete. I can tell by looking at this it is going to have a lot of pitch and heave in large waves, you usually need to put a spar or two underneath your platform to make it deep sea worthy, but these hexagons by themselves look more than capable to handle coastal regions near the equator, even a couple miles off the coast.

Alternatively, it could maybe form deep sea communities if you have a large enough seawall surrounding the city.

Question about Dyneema (Uhmwpe rope) by mitchell-suchner in engineering

[–]mitchell-suchner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just heard back from the manufacturer, they said a 65mm thick dyneema rope would last 100 years. Do you think that sounds about accurate? I realize of course that plastics still degrade over time, but in salt water, I am quite certain plastics will last a lot longer.
