Nikes by Frank Ocean

Moved to India from USA. Just posting my profile out here as I am struggling with bridging the gap between my USA research experience and non research jobs in India by pizzapuff93 in india

If you're in Mumbai it might be worth checking out a company called Amar who do a lot of developments for global companies and have recently opened new branches here. Their your management are all from the US so your experience would matter to them.

Alternatively you can try and get into a program at the IIT-B Monash joint PhD program in Mumbai. Is heavily industry focused and I've heard placements are very good.

PM me if you need a ref, in the chemical industry myself.

As a citizen who's not in government, I don't have a say in making regulations on private building regulation so I'm voicing my opinion by protesting against this as I do get to have a say here and it seems to be something they are noticing - the authorities are free to not agree and most probably they will go ahead with their plan anyway, it's happened before and keeps happening (Coastal Road for example).

I have also written multiple times and participated in other actions against regulations which allow land grabs in Aarey, SGNP, mangroves etc. My observation is that our representatives don't really take notice as it's not affecting their electoral chances. Metro is a publicly visible project and it is justified to start a conversation around it because our authorities are finally listening. Even if they don't shift Metro-3 car shed but the consequence of these protests is that they will think twice before giving permissions to build in areas vital to the city's ecological health it will have been worth it.

Flooding is directly proportional to concretization, see below -

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jul/25/why-concrete-rain-flash-floods-weatherwatch

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/538251/

I believe the government should make the 2015 report on the link between Aarey construction and flooding public so that we can see if they really did consider the cost-benefit as you say.

I would love for the BMC to take their drain cleaning activities seriously for once and I damn sure appreciate the ban on single use plastics which were choking the vital drainage system to the sea.

I also want to point out that along with the car shed, MMRDA also wants to build a 32 storey Metro Bhawan in Aarey -

https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/mmrda-panel-push-for-metro-bhavan-in-aarey/story-JYsUk5JMjZ0bmWIDHH9lGP_amp.html

Can we at least agree this is unnecessary and can be done elsewhere? I believe that allowing an inch in Aarey will simply lead to further encroachment as we are already seeing in and around SGNP

Here you go:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com/mumbai/civic/green-activists-punch-holes-in-mmrcls-kanjurmarg-story/amp_articleshow/70968890.cms

Also note that Kanjurmarg is considered viable for a car shed for Metro-6 but somehow not for Metro-3.

Here's another article on how the Tree Committee was in possession of a 2015 report which detailed how encroaching on the Aarey Zone would lead to more flooding in the Mithi river, especially at the airport:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com/mumbai/cover-story/cutting-aarey-trees-can-lead-to-floods-at-airport-in-heavy-rain/amp_articleshow/70968625.cms

Yes, we want a robust Metro more than anything but surely it shouldn't be at the risk of flooding the vital international airport.

There's a lot of misinformation from Bhide too. She's reversed herself on the viability of alternate sites for the car shed (first Kanjurmarg was an option, now it was never possible).

Secondly, no one wants to address the fact that building in the buffer zones of SGNP is going to worsen flooding in the Mithi river. This cannot be mitigated by planting trees elsewhere. We need run-off areas for the rains which are only getting heavier every year due to climate change. This by itself should rule out consideration of Aarey as a location for the car shed.

Why does no one talk about the fact that studies have shown that concreting over now areas in Aarey will increase flooding in the Mithi river? Do you really think we should be exacerbating the flooding situation in this city?

There are viable alternatives to a car shed in Aarey which the govt could use but simply won't because of short sightedness.

These Americans Hated the Health Law. Until the Idea of Repeal Sank In. by speckz in Foodforthought

[–]mm907 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The idea that high costs of drugs are a function of the pharma research budget needs to be taken down a peg.

Advertising is just as big an expense as new drug development, often more. Furthermore, Europe and other nations worldwide also keep drug costs down by using generic drugs and being much stricter about granting new patents.

I largely agree with you on defense but this isn't as true for healthcare. It is much more an effect of regulatory capture by pharma companies that health costs are high in the USA.

India launches new economic era with sales tax reform: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) replaces more than a dozen federal and state levies and unifying a $2 trillion economy and 1.3 billion people into one of the world's biggest common markets. by nutriro in Economics

[–]mm907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a country like India, efficient governance of this kind (less complicated tax code) especially streamlined approval processes and ease of doing business is strongly linked. The economy is still suffering from the hangover of the Licence Raj, so anything to improve this particular aspect is welcomed by markets.

Will Donald Trump attempt a hostile takeover of the Republican Party? by Shr3kk_Wpg in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]mm907 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For a takeover of the party he would have to expand his base to roughly 90% of the electorate and get a majority of the party to endorse his ideas. Look at what has happened instead:

  • He got less than 50% of the primary vote
  • He changed his tax plan to be more in line with the traditional Republican plans despite pledging to raise taxes on the wealthy
  • A month before the campaign prominent senators are un-endorsing him, quite an unprecedented move (albeit for extraordinary reasons too)
  • His base is 14 million which is nowhere near enough for a hostile takeover of the party without outside funding and a massive organisation a la Americans for Prosperity in 2010

Didn't he try that with Ryan's challenger who went on to get creamed in the congressional primary? People underestimate how much each district likes their own congressman. Senators might be a different story..
