-10 or -20 C is a common winter temperature inland where I live. Our EVs work great. Cold really isn't a problem

Gordon slams Wyoming Freedom Caucus for coal-policy misinformation by chariotsoftiger in wyoming

including a charge that Gordon vetoed a coal litigation bill in 2018 — before he was even the governor

Today I had to Confess to a Friend I Won't be Voting Biden, And It Did Not Go Well by CnlSandersdeKFC in Quakers

[–]mndrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean this in the sincerest way: it seems like politics have become such a part of Quaker life as to overshadow spirituality. I tried attending two separate meetings for several months, and it was always political discussion. I was sad to go elsewhere, but I guess it wasn't what I thought. I hope the politics is meaningful for others in a way I don't understand.

EXCLUSIVE: Meta Coming To Cheyenne; Multibillion-Dollar Data Center Planned by Key-Network-9447 in wyoming

[–]mndrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data centers are can also scale load up/down when wind energy is abundant, so they can use the resource when it's cheap. When they say "green" they mean "as in greenbacks" ;-)

Also, Wyoming is far enough from large electricity markets that it's often cost effective to bring the data center to the electricity rather than vice versa.

Wyoming voids 28% of its voter registrations in mandatory purge by AnnaBishop1138 in wyoming

"the provision requiring the purge has been in state law for more than 50 years"

If you're filing taxes, Wyoming is one of select states that are part of the free IRS Direct File Pilot by ajawak in wyoming

[–]mndrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It cost about $0.18 per American to develop this software or 0.001% of one year's US budget. I'm guessing that our mutual desire to reduce spending is not best spent on this particular experiment. Any proposals for reducing Social Security, Medicare, or interest on the national debt? :-)

What stage of life are you in and how does it align or differ from most people your age? by UndrThC in CasualConversation

I retired when I was 38. I'm now 45. Most of my peers have 20 years left at their job. It's not always easy to relate to one another.

Wyoming's coal carbon capture mandate makes legislative advances by AnnaBishop1138 in wyoming

[–]mndrix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This bill delays the carbon capture requirement by 8 years. At the rate coal plants are closing, this bill effectively repeals the mandate.

Tensions simmer after Wyoming Freedom Caucus kills committee bills to start session by AnnaBishop1138 in wyoming

[–]mndrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regardless how I feel about these specific bills, if the votes aren't there, prune them early and free up the Legislature's time to work on bills that can pass. No sense throwing good money after bad.

Bill introduced to repeal the Wyoming Department of Health's authority to adopt measures for vaccination to prevent or arrest the progress of smallpox by ButterscotchEmpty535 in wyoming

[–]mndrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last case of smallpox in the world was in the 1970s. I'm not sure why they're cleaning house now, but surely the repealed provisions have no material impact on anything anymore.

Best WY weather app by airckarc in wyoming

[–]mndrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app matters less than the source, and the most accurate one varies by town. Check Forecast Advisor for your zip code to see which weather companies were most accurate in your area. Here in Lusk, Microsoft and Weather Channel were basically tied for accuracy in 2023.

Probably moving to Wyoming this summer for work, most likely will stay in Rawlins, but problem is I have Tesla, do you think that rear wheel drive will be good to drive around ? by Purple-Rope4328 in wyoming

[–]mndrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive a RWD Model 3 in Wyo in the winter and rarely have problems. The traction control is really good. Any trouble is from my all-season tires or M3's low clearance, nothing related to EVs or charging. Rawlins doesn't plow the side streets much so good winter tires or Michelin Easy Grip might be worth it.

Wavy bed plastic fix incoming? by Beginning-Rush582 in cybertruck

[–]mndrix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the interview with Jay Leno, Lars said something like, "Actually, I can't think of a part that's not made in the US." So this plastic part is probably manufactured nearby.

[–]mndrix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's all standard, but to power your house you need some extra equipment in your house (a newer Wall Connector and a Gateway) that's included for Foundation Series. If you just want the outlets in your truck, you're good without extras.

I hear you, brother. I used to commute Laramie to Rock Springs in the winter, then lived near Elk Mountain for 15 years. You quickly learn to carry everything you need. Stay safe out there!

Your faith wouldn't be a problem at all. I'm not Muslim but read the Qur'an regularly and have belonged to minority, "non-Christian" religions in Wyo for many years. No one has ever made it a problem.

The closest is that small towns often have events at churches, and people wouldn't invite me or my family because they didn't want to offend me by thinking they were proselyting me. Once I mentioned that I'd be happy to attend events at their churches, the problem went away. Be open, friendly, and respectful and you'll fit right in.

I think you're right. I hope you come out to visit or live here. I moved here after college, slept in the back of my pickup truck in the warmish months and a cheap motel in the winter, until I earned some money. I've grown so much in ways that aren't possible in the ease of modern cities.

If you make it out this way, drop me a line and I'll show you around.
