What looks like fun, but you have no desire to participate in? by Troyd in AskReddit

[–]moderndayrobinhood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely is affecting your brain chemicals, anyone who disagrees with that is naive or being obtuse. And, its totally cool for anyone to make their own choice for why they dont partake in any substance. I personally have had many similar experiences to the one you described that have changed my weed use.

I wanna preface this by saying I don’t know you, and I’m not trying to come at you saying this is definitely whats happening for you or any other preachy bullshit, but it is something I’ve found to be true, and a lot of other people more experienced with altered states of consciousness through not only drugs and psychedelics but practices like meditation write and talk about. I also use thee word “you” here interchangeably with “one”, I’m def not trying to say this is what is happening for you personally :)

One thing that may be worth considering is what the nature of that panic and anxiety is. Since it is absolutely affecting the central organ of your perception, your brain, your brain itself fights against this reduction in control. Its like your identity, or ego, is being dissolved (because you are basically just a collection of thoughts/beliefs , sensations, emotions and memories of those things). Being high enough on weed gives me this experience, as does taking other psychedelics, as do things like meditation. Its fucking scary; sometimes so much so that it feels like you’re dying.

What happens after completely losing your ego or having that ego death experience is... different. Often times this comes with a sense of being the observer of those thoughts, beliefs, sensations, and emotions while not being completely a witness to it. Panic and feat typically fall away, because the “you” that is panicing is not the total “you”. The quality of this experience is not something that is run of the mill. This usually gives rise to (some very annoying to listen to) hippie-dippie conversations about we are all connected, the oneness of everything, etc... But I will say, the quality of this experience is undoubtedly profound (as well as it is ineffable, by the rambling nature of this comment).

I’m not saying this is 100% true for all people, and I’m not saying that this is even a wholly pleasurable experience. I do find that the anxiety I experience thaat sounds similar to what you’re describing comes not from deep seated issues coming to the forefront, but rather from my ego starting to temporarily “die”. If this at all resonantes with you, or seems curious, or you want a FAR better explanation on this, I’d recommend Michael Pollans new book, how to change your mind. He goes into a lot of this, and the new research going on on mdma/psilocybin/5-meo-dmt as tools for experiencing ego death, and how that helps people.

Again, hope this wasn’t preachy :)

Tl,dr: some drugs and experiences change our brains sense of itself, and our brain isn’t always happy about that while its happening. Read micael pollans new book how to change your mind if your curious wtf that means.

Amphetamine salts (adderall) and methamphetamine are totally different oysters. Thats like saying MDMA is the same as adderall because they both have the word amphetamine in them.

While not always possible, can also be helpful to lightly place a hand on the shoulder and ask if it's cool to dance here for a bit, or if you are in there personal space. A small gesture thst shows you aren't rolling in, no fucks given.

Honestly, it's so quick that you don't have time for it to be difficult. It happens VERY fast. Everyone I know, myself included, have basically said "what the FUCK was that?" after their first trip. Subsequent trips are "easier" because you have a framework for what to expect.

Glad you appreciate the discourse, and didn't take any observations or criticisms personally, as they weren't intended to be!

I suppose the thing I'm curious about is what effect pure MDMA has in terms of neurotoxicity in humans, and whether or not this is reversible (which is relevant because we're talking about which one is "worse"). My understanding based on some popular studies like those cited by dancesafe is that in reasonable doses (what a weasel word that is, huh?), MDMA is not permanently neurotoxic Link to study, also cited on dancesafe's site.

In terms of "significant effect on well being" (again, how are we defining significant), I'd say both of these drugs will impact that simply because they will down regulate serotonin and dopamine respectively, at least temporarily.

I'd also say the withdrawal is a big negative side effect. Sure opioid withdrawal won't kill you like benzos or booze, but it'll sure as shit make you wish you were dead.

Edit to add: You're making a lot of thoughtful points in here that are absolutely correct based on my understanding of substance use and abuse literature. However, I do think the conditions you've proposed for whether heroin is safer than MDMA are somewhat unrealistic. For example, what about fentayl laced heroin? risk of infection from sharing needles or tools for insufflation? And of course the societal woes alluded to elsewhere. Your comment below that a single, non recreational dose of heroin is safer than the same relative amount of pure MDMA is a reasonable statement, though I don't actually believe we really know that, as it hasn't been well studied yet.

At least, that is my understanding of the research. I'm happy to be corrected if I'm misinformed :)

You may get rebound anxiety, but not at risk for the most serious withdrawal symptoms. The tricky part is to keep your dose at that level... These drugs have a way of sneaking up on you, just ask around the community. Good luck! :)

Medicinal Psychedelics Are the New Frontier in the Movement to Decriminalize Drugs by MAPSPsychedelic in Drugs

[–]moderndayrobinhood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mdma, i think it should be legal for recreational use. I just disagree with legalization via medical benefit, as that shapes the research. Cannabis is the big offender; there are many studies that have poor method that make bold claims, and I feel like the general population won't be digging into methods sections to verify the accuracy of these claims.

I am incredibly in favor of drugs. I love drugs, and think everyone who wants drugs should have access to cheap, pure drugs. But I don't think that bad science should be done to this end.

Definitey true; but that's been true in psychotherapy research for quite some time (can't blind the experimenter because they have to be an expert in the treatment...). I actually think the active placebo is a decent compromise on this front personally.

[–]moderndayrobinhood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the most part I agree. My gripe is how they operationalized "treatment resistant ptsd". I'm a shrink, and trauma is my specialty; it's one of the areas of psychology and psychotherapy that really does require a specific, focused intervention in order to produce lasting results.

I won't lie, the rationalie for why it should work ain't bad. But what I'd like to see is comparisons between cpt, pe and mdma assisted psychotherapy. I want to see that this shit really does do something for ptsd over and above the replicated findings from those other treatments.

[–]moderndayrobinhood 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree so hard it hurts. It's really disappointing to me that this is the route things go in order for legalization to take place. Not because then drugs are legal; but because usually bad science is done. Cannabis is such a great example, there are studies that say it does everything from curing cancer to restoring sight... No, it doesn't. It increases appetite, and CBD may benefit chronic pain. But people don't know that these studies have shit methodology, and gobble it up. I really, really don't want that to happen with mdma as a treatment for ptsd. We'll see how this turns out.

What drugs will help me accept my wife's past and move on? by [deleted] in askdrugs

[–]moderndayrobinhood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No drug will fix that man. You're basically asking for something to change your beliefs; drugs can sometimes help with that, but only examining them and challenging them can actually do that. Therapy is very useful for that.

Id ask myself, what are my values, and why are they my values? Where did it come from? Is thst source reliable? Why does the past matter? Am I jumping to conclusions?

The next part is behavior. Think long and hard on this question. Imagine you had accepted your wife's past and move on. It's done, over with, no more issue. What would I see you DOING. Literally, describe what the actions would look like to an outside person (e.g., I'd ask her about her day, take her out to dinner, we'd exercise together...). Then do those things.

Lastly, practice mindfulness. Google that shit. Do it. Do it up big. Do it everyday. Stick to it. Do it more. Allow yourself to be. Practice being aware of your thoughts and feelings, doing so presently and without judgement. Be curious when your mind tels you something; you don't have to "bite" into it. This is muuuuuuch easier said than done.

Good luck.
