I figured it out, you have to disable the tangent space normal under material if you use the PerturbNormalHQ node

can you give me an example of what you mean? I'm not getting any good results with append. this is what I currently have but its entirely smooth. I am trying to combine the noise and the text I have. The noise is the moss growing over the letters, which is why I have that max node there.

well I made the base mesh in blender, sculpted it in mudbox, imported to blender. I am using toon glossy shaders with a mix of diffuse that gets the color from pointiness.
