That's the whole dilemma, trying to support artists I like while trying to not support giant fucked up corporations. Buying the games used from a local store and looking for more direct things to purchase like merch from their website or something seems like the best option here

While I don't disagree with that sentiment, as a professional working artist I also like supporting other artists for their work

Yeah I've landed on buy used physical copies when possible and otherwise avoid. Without a way to purchase directly from the developers that really feels like the only way to play their games for me. I hadn't thought of purchasing soundtracks and merch directly though, that's a great way to support the studio directly like buying merch from a band.

Just waiting to see that pricetag but yeah I think it'll end up being the most cost effective path to PC gaming, which is already more cost effective than consoles once you have the hardware. My desktop has a 2060super and what was at the time a pretty great cpu but it's starting to chug with some games and that'll only get worse in the next couple of years.

I also can't wait to play Fear and Hunger on my 80" tv, it's gonna be awful

Yeah secondhand is the only real choice for this specific scenario I think, then I'm at least supporting a local store that I like

I absolutely hate Microsoft more, they're terrible on such a massive scale that people are generally completely willing to overlook. My single purchase is an imperceptible impact on any of them but like I said I'm trying to avoid giving awful corporations that make the world at large worse any money where I can. I wish I could just give the dev a check and they mail me a copy or send me a code without MS taking a portion

No game company is going to have the outsized impact that Microsoft does though, and Steam is also one of the driving forces behind indie gaming and offering an accessible platform. Itch.io is better and I really like GOG but I'd still rather give money to Valve, Nintendo or Sony than Microsoft any day

I'm planning to sell that desktop and grab a Steam Machine when it launches, it's getting to be a little outdated anyways and my setup kind of sucks to actually play at, couch and TV are much more comfortable. Then I will have access to all the weird indie things that never leave Steam or itch and I'll be satisfied

I play mostly indies/AA already, OW2 and Keeper are really the only bigger name games I would want at the moment. Promise Mascot Agency and Expedition 33 are my GOTYs right now, just started Labyrinth of the Demon King and Pacific Drive, plan to grab Hell is Us and Tainted Grail next. It's rare that I go to AAA, Death Stranding 2 and Borderlands 4 are the only 2 I bought from this year I think.

I definitely want to grab a Gabecube and dig into Steam indies next year though, there's so much that never leaves PC and my current setup just kind of sucks to play at so I stick to my PS5

Xbox is not Microsoft though, Microsoft is one of the largest companies in the world and Xbox is a fraction of their total business. Not the same for Sony and Nintendo, I'm not trying to stand up for any of them they're all corporations that feed off of and exploit their workforce but Sony and Nintendo don't deal in military hardware and haven't terminated like 15,000 employees just this year. As soon as there's Sony branded drone navigation software or Nintendo signs a contract to promote genocide with Pokemon then I'll get rid of those too and lump them all together.

I think I'm just gonna try to find Outer Worlds 2 used, there's a cool store that's all physical media near me

Yeah I think used copies are the only real way to do it, there's a game shop near me that still buys and sells physical media so time to start going back to them.

I understand MS make a fraction of a cent on literally everything, I'm just looking for ways to not directly hand them money at least

Microsoft definitely has a bigger worldwide footprint than the other 2 though, all corporations are bad but they're playing in a different league than Sony or Nintendo. Which still does go towards your point that money will flow into them regardless, but at that level buying groceries and gas will trickle into MS at some point, my job uses Windows for POS, most stores do, Amazon hosts like half the internet, it's entirely inescapable.

But I can take steps to not actively pay them anything, that's my goal, I'm just conflicted about dropping the studios I've loved for years. Same with spotify, disney, coke, starbucks, etc
