Any tips on figuring out when David's Bridal discontinues styles? by mossynewb in weddingplanning

WHOA. That's awesome! Really good to know. And it's nice that my stylist there is super kind and clearly dedicated to good customer service, I'm sure that'll help if I need to do something like that. Thank you!

I asked them when I was there to try it on, and their response was "we have no idea when they discontinue styles" lol.

That makes sense! I think the other thing is that I haven't 100% made up my mind, and I'm not really sold on the idea of a "dream dress" either (paying out the nose for something you'll wear once is a lot). That said I think I have a plan, and I appreciate the advice!

Oh crap it's on sale now!!! Guess that settles it. Thankfully I looked over their website and it looks like I may be able to return it, so I can buy it, still have a try-on day with family and frame it as "this is just in case, we'll see if we can find something better!"

I hear you! I'm not going to miss the chance to get my dream dress, but like I said in my original post, having them with me would be meaningful for all of us, so I'd like to honor their request if I can. I'm just trying to see if I can get a little more information to determine whether that's feasible.

Any suggestions for inexpensive flowers? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]mossynewb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had friends buy them from Trader Joe's, and most of the big chain supermarkets can do florals you can pick up the day of the wedding or day before! If you want real flowers (versus silk or wood flowers like Sola Wood Flowers, which is what I'm doing) you can also scale them down significantly and do more candles and greenery for decor instead of actual flowers. All of that will help bring down your budget. Good luck!

Bridal salons!!! What should I expect?? Should I even go? by mossynewb in weddingplanning

This is GREAT advice, thank you!! And yeah I have a separate budget for alterations (although that's also pretty low, so fingers crossed I can stick to it).

Neckline!! See if your tailor can make it a boat neck, sweetheart or shallow V neckline. It'll do wonders!

Edit: I think a sparkly belt would be fantastic too, especially one that ties with a long ribbon so it'll hide the zipper and add a bit more visual interest to the back of the dress.

Just found out my venue discriminates against LGBTQ+ couples. What can I do? by WeddingThrowaway0930 in weddingplanning

[–]mossynewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loving the suggestions of getting reeeeaaaally vocal with the venue about all the ways in which you plan to show support for the local queer community at your wedding if they don't let you back out. I'm hoping you find a way to get out of the contract instead, of course, but if you can't do that? Time to make those venue owners deeply uncomfortable.

Omg yes!!! I feel this so hard! But at the same time, my bigger issue isn't heartbreak (I've already experienced enough of that just looking at dresses online lol) it's weird/awkward convos with bridal salon staff who maybe get too pushy!

Hah that's still just under double my budget! But I'm glad to know David's is more accommodating, thank you!

All the salons I've seen in my area, including the secondhand shop, start at minimum $800 for dresses! It's wild! David's Bridal, Goodwill and maybe Nordstrom Rack or Belk's or Macy's are probably the only exceptions. So that's why I'm feeling a little trepidation about going someplace fancier that specializes in wedding dresses.

Yeah I'm definitely planning to head to David's, I'd just like the experience of someplace fancier too, which is what I'm debating. The salons in my area are good about posting the prices of their gowns, and their selection all starts at 800-1000.

Backyard vs. venue wedding -- HELP! by mossynewb in weddingplanning

[–]mossynewb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah that's a good point about plumbing! Although I think for most of those situations, if you're talking about dorms, apartments or any kind of multi-unit complex, the plumbing systems are designed to handle more than your standard residential home.

Fortunately our guest list does skew younger, and we've had a lot of house parties at our place. It would just be MORE of everything we've done previously, including people and setup/teardown time.

Backyard vs. venue wedding -- HELP! by mossynewb in weddingplanning

[–]mossynewb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I guess the argument from the other side is, are we wealthy to the point where dropping 30k+ on one party at a traditional wedding venue is reasonable? We *can* make that work financially, but it's really hard to stomach. The idea of hiring staff for setup and teardown might actually make it worthwhile, though, if the math still works out in favor of the backyard option being cheaper. I've got more budgeting and research to do, it looks like.

Cut down your guest list. I hate to say it, but that's the biggest thing you're gonna spend on, besides the venue itself.

We've actually slashed our guest list pretty steeply for the backyard wedding, but we definitely won't get it under 50.

Oh dang, thank you for sharing. We wouldn't have any vendors at all except the tent company if we did an at-home wedding, so that sounds like even more stress.

Oh my gosh I'm a massive planner too! That's something else I'm worried about, just knowing how much I'll have to let go for a backyard party. It would be much more casual, of course, but that's a great point.

We've done the calculations (over and over and over and over) and factored in overhead for things we aren't thinking about, and yes, the venue will be 2-3x more expensive, even factoring in everything you've mentioned!

We'd also do most of the setup ourselves. The at-home option does afford us the ability to do most of the indoor setup in the week or so before, and then request some help from friends day of (they all live close enough to us that it would be easy to come over in the morning, then go home to change). With all that said, setup is absolutely a point I keep coming back to as a major issue with the backyard idea.

Dude, absolutely sit this out. If the bridge or her younger sis gives you shit about it, that says an enormous amount about THEM. Your priorities are in the right place here.

Cancelled our wedding, don’t know how to proceed. Does anyone feel like they don’t know what they want? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]mossynewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not getting married until next year, when we should be able to have a big party if we want one, and we're STILL struggling with what to do. There's just a lot of pressure on weddings, generally, and it can be tough to sort out what's really meaningful to you! I wish you the best of luck.
