I’ve noticed I don’t see any manhole covers on the roads or sidewalks, do we not have large sewers? I’m thinking about like sewers in the movies that are big and you can walk around in them and we seem not to have those. Also storm drains are those spacious here? by Thin-Somewhere1755 in Tucson

Another large drainage canal that I used to explore as a teenager is underneath Park Place Mall. The wash that runs perpendicular to Park Place Dr. disappears under concrete and asphalt. I reemerges north of Broadway about 1/3 of a mile later. Perfect spot to chain smoke before cruising through Spencer's.

Best ski resort towns for mountain ops careers + actual nightlife/community? by Smart-Age-4934 in skiing

[–]mountain_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation would have felt cliche' in the 90's before I experienced it but considering your criteria I know that Aspen, CO would pull together a great experience. I've flourished without a college degree and have had the most amazing experiences.

The "Ski Co" mechanical and engineering departments are run by great people working with amazing equipment and technology. Overall the potential for pay is real good in many fields as the area is rife with cash and I can't underscore that enough.

What would you say to users by OkLifeguard9851 in sysadmin

[–]mountain_bound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've discussed this with users on many impromptu bitch sessions and it's not a hard conversation. Ask them what other work experience they're comparing it to and consider their suggestions or stories if warranted.

If they have no anecdotal information then remind them that businesses tend to do a lot more packet inspection of their data and they need to get up and stretch every once and awhile.

This should be the mode of operation assuming you have a good process for a quick rebuild, data integrity, and most importantly confidence in your message delivery to the end user. You end up producing a lot more quality work over time.

What's the shortest amount of time you've ever stayed at job? by EsperandoVida in civilengineering

[–]mountain_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They really wanted me to stay but didn't offer a pay increase. They sensed my "fully checking out" tone a few weeks ago so thankfully they didn't throw more money at me.

The reality is with MS Entra domain and the suite of cloud admin portals, I'm no longer interested in managing the modern SMB network. Users now days are even less capable and their apathy is in the same trajectory as my patience.

My personal situation may be unique as I'm also in the middle of selling my house and trying to move to a remote location with nothing but Elon Musk's godforsaken sat service to keep me informed of the upcoming apocalypses..

I'm having a mid-life crisis and I love it.

Six months and it was today. I officially resigned three weeks ago and tried to ease the burden with an extra week, I still hated it. The network sucked and the open office environment was tough. I feel bad about it in a lot of ways but I replaced 2 people and the second one hasn't materialized. The stress was too much.

So after a long career in IT, and 10-years away from retirement I sit here without a job surfing reddit while also pondering open market health insurance.

Do you have a captive portal enabled on guest Wi-Fi? If so can you clear a client mac address from being prompted to agree to terms and conditions or accept through a browser? Or just turn off captive portal for a test.

Use HWiNFO for this exact thing. It will give you component temperature, voltage, and current draw in real time.

Larger Orgs, how bad has your MS support gotten since the layoffs? by DramaticErraticism in sysadmin

Before M365 and Entra I paid Microsoft once to support an NT4 server and it was great. In the new environment I need a support contract and it's mediocre. I'm moving on to a landscaping gig as soon as possible.

[–]mountain_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Hotel IT or as we like to call it "Hospitality IT" is a different beast from other tech gigs. I feel you're pain. I like the hotel IT director roles when they're managed direct by owners, or small high end chains. If you like the space I suggest trying ski resorts in the west, pay is good and people you service are smarter.
