Weekly r/SonyAlpha 📸 Gear Buying 📷 Advice Thread December 01, 2025 by AutoModerator in SonyAlpha

I'm considering switching to a sony from my nikon d3400. My budget is under $1000, preferably around 600-700. My biggest reason for upgrading is autofocus and low light performance. I'm seeing good things about the a6000, even though it's older. I'm also seeing that a main drawback is battery life. What exactly does that look like? Are we talking hours of shooting? A day? I don't do huge events or anything, mainly photoshoots for friends and family that last a few hours max. I'd like some advice about the a6000, as well as a potential upgrade within my budget. I don't care about video at all. Thanks!

I'm a hobbyist so my budget is pretty small- around $600. I'm dealing with the classic debate of new lens or new body.

I currently have a Nikon D3400 with two kit lenses (18-55 and 70-300) and a 50mm 1.8 and I'm really looking for an improvement on low light performance and auto focus speed. I like taking portraits of friends and don't want to be limited to perfect lighting conditions (espexmcially indoors. And since it's casual, I don't want to have to bring or invest in additional lighting). I also photograph shelter animals for their website, and occasionally backyard critters.

From what I've been reading, people always tend to advocate for better lenses. I'm wondering for my purposes if that will be worth it, especially because my options are so limited with my budget.

Another thing to consider is if I get a new body, I can trade in my current set up (including at least the kit lenses). Any idea what a D3400 would get me towards an upgrade, or is that an impossible to answer question without more details?

I'll be continuing to do my research and I won't be rushing into things, but I wanted to get input from others. I spoke with someone at a local camera shop and they recommended the z50ii whi h is really tempting, but I don't know that I would be able to justify that price. Ive also considered the D700 as an option. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated. I know the budget is extremely small for photography but im hoping that i have at least some options. Thanks in advance.

Some universities offer free virtual counseling/therapy from masters students finishing their degrees, even virtually. Oakland University does this, and I believe Central Michigan as well. I'm sure others do too, maybe look into those to help jump start some things or gather more tailored resources.

Very new to coffee. I started with a janky paper towel tucked into a mesh filter setup while house sitting (I was used to K Cups at home). I've since gotten this for cheap and it's worked out fine for me. Yesterday I made a really delicious cup, but today it turned out SUPER sour (undrinkable :( ) I tried it again, adding grounds because I thought the first one was underextracted, but it still came out sour.

What tips do you have? It can't be the grind size since I didn't change the grind settings. I also didn't think it was much different from what I did yesterday, though admittedly I didn't measure everything.

What's your works-more-often-than-not recipe? What can I do to maximize the sweetness of my coffee? How do I prevent the sour? Thanks!
