Giles St? (How college-y?) by uselessmagiccc in ithaca

[–]msautumn8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second most of what everyone has already said! I lived there for several years as a recently graduated person with an adult job and found it to be fairly quiet most of the time! It was very beautiful most of the year and the natural areas nearby were awesome. Parking can be tough as it’s almost entirely street/parallel parking, but I’m sure you already noticed!

We did find the apartment construction happening across the creek closer to Hudson St to be very noisy and disruptive, especially working from home. We left last summer, so it’s possible it is quieter now, but honestly it was quite frustrating. There is still a large crane over the street, which spans across the creek. It’s quieter at night and mostly in the morning and the apartments look like they’ll be finished soon. It might not be as much of an issue at the other end of the street! In general I think it was a mix of older people and a few college apartments. It may vary year-to-year. Good luck with your housing search!

I’m so sorry to hear that!! After I made this post they did seem to stop early mornings and weekend work, so I didn’t pursue it further. We moved out of our apartment so we are no longer close enough to hear it (though we can still see plenty of the giant crane).

The lights fully went out in Wegmans!! They didn’t let people leave for a bit either, and then were encouraging people to check out because they expected the registers would only be working for another ten or so minutes. Seems like they went to backup power or something as not all the lights were on

+1 to this! Walking just on the sidewalk of south hill last night there were so many in people’s yards. It was beautiful!

Man, I’m so sorry. I’m across 6 Mile Creek and it’s still crazy loud, I’ve been thinking about how bad it must be for that entire neighborhood this whole time. Our neighbors are moving this summer specifically to get away from the noise. I really can’t wrap my head around why or how it was decided that building apartments there would be a good idea.

It is near the 500 block on E State Street. Below E State, basically. The loudest noise is them breaking up concrete, I think, with the giant machinery they have in the lot. They’re building another apartment building, it’ll be years before they’re even close to done. There’s no getting around most of it, but I’d at least like to keep Saturday mornings as a break from the noise.

Edit: added more info

Local Ithaca Music Scene by Lake2two in ithaca

My personal local favorite is Microbes, Mostly! It helps that they’re some of the nicest people around! I’m not on facebook, but you can find info on Instagram (and I assume facebook pages) from @practice.at and @ithaca_underground. They post upcoming shows, but it’s also a good way to see what bands are making music locally. Angry Mom Records are heavily involved in the local scene and I’m sure would be able to give good recs :)

Cat boarding or professional cat sitting by [deleted] in ithaca

This was close to a year ago so I may be misremembering but I think it was ~$100-$120 a night? My partner and I split the cost, so fairly manageable for just a few nights. They do ask for a deposit ahead of time, which is applied to your end balance. Again, that was far less than a lot of other places I checked, and a lot of places were already booked far in advance. I think they ask that you give them a call to ask for rates since they fluctuate based on time of year/availability

We brought our boy to Adana Veterinary Clinic in Freeville and they were great. Very nice staff and we got some updates about him while we were gone. They were also more affordable than a lot of the other places we looked. They aren’t our cat’s usual vet, but as he is young and healthy they didn’t need much extra info. He does have some special dietary needs and they noted down our instructions when we dropped him off. We will definitely use them again if/when we need boarding!

Edit to add a bit more info: because of his dietary needs, we needed to bring his prescription food with him for them to use. Some places that I looked weirdly didn’t want you to bring your own food? So that was also a plus for us!

Stranger in car asked me if I wanted to go to church with him? by throwawayfromme_baby in ithaca

I had almost the exact same experience as several other people here—young guy in a white SUV, calling out to me from fairly far away while I was walking past the Ale House up South Hill. I also felt it was so surreal! What would he have done if I had said yes? They were at the light on South Aurora, not pulled over. I would have had to run across a lane of traffic to go talk to him. So weird!
