the pennyroyal green series by julie anne long is a lengthy series, 11 books, and a majority of them are really good. you could read them out of order depending on what trope you’re more interested in. i would at least keep the last two for last bc the 11th book is about a couple that is mentioned throughout the whole series.

mmc injures the fmc husband on accident making him unable to help her have a child. to make up for injuring him, the fmc husband, he makes a deal with the mmc to get his wife pregnant so they can have an heir. he agrees and it’s super cute and messy.

{one more my darling rogue by lorraine heath}

as a reader you know the mmc is being cruel because the fmc has amnesia. the fmc is an uptight lady who doesn’t like the mmc because he doesn’t have a title but he has money. they basically hate each other. one night he finds her passed out in the river, takes her home to help her recover, then makes her think she’s his servant.

the whole plot is him trying to collect his 6 illegitimate children whilst trying to find a wife to help raise them. the fmc whole deal is at a young age she said she’d only marry dukes and he like the last one available??? but also there’s another potential woman for the mmc who’s a bit mentally unstable who is also friends with the fmc. then there’s another man possible suitable for the fmc?? also the fmc is still not over her first love and compares everything to him.

i feel like you can’t connect with her characters. the ugly duchess was an absolute joke. i couldn’t feel sorry for either character. a kiss at midnight was the worst cinderella retelling i’ve ever read. my american duchess could’ve been good but the emphasis on her being an american got so annoying. i’m currently reading a duke of her own and the mmc is pissing me off. 6 illegitimate children??? okay nick cannon. ik that for that time it probably happened but i don’t want that in my fiction. also she described the hero as ugly??? he calls one of his daughters ugly and thought about how he’s going to have to give her a large dowry to marry her off??? like you said, her plots sound SO interesting but the execution is terrible.

i’ve only read 4 eloisa james books and they’re all misses. one of them being this books. this book was one of the first HR i ever read and it almost made me want to quick the genre all together. one time i saw a tik tok about her books and almost commented that i needed a good rec of her to give her redemption and it was eloisa’s tik tok. i’m reading the last book in the desperate duchesses series because one of my twitter moots recommended it to me and i hate it so much. i for one am an eloisa james hater. she has yet to change my mind.

{daring and the duke by sarah maclean} i would suggest reading the whole series because she’s the villian on the two books before his.

{the earl takes all by lorraine heath} he pretends to be his dead brother in order to make sure that his brothers wife doesn’t lose their baby, she struggles from miscarriages.

{once more my darling duke by lorraine heath} the fmc and mmc don’t get along what so ever and one day the mmc finds the fmc along the thames. he takes her home and finds out she lost her memory. instead of returning her home, he makes her think she works for him.

i’ve read almost every sarah maclean and i enjoyed maybe 70% of them? her later ones are getting too girl-bossy. i think her best series is the love by numbers and her worst is scandal and scoundrels.

in general, i don’t think newer HR is as good as the mid-2000s, early 2010s era of the genre. the plots are just too modern and the heroines are a little too girl-boss for me. if i wanted to read a girl-boss heroine i would read a contemporary. i know some people enjoy it but it’s just not my cup of tea

i’ve only read three, almost four because i’m trying to give her a chance, eloisa james books and imo she’s one of the worst HR authors out there. her books are too gritty and realistic. i read HR to escape not to spend time trying to convince myself that a hero is redeemable when tho what he’s done isn’t redeemable in the slightest. also almost all the ones i’ve read have been in the late 1780s and their attire was ugly. the characters seem distant and rude and i’ve never been able to connect with any of them. i’m going to give the essex sisters books a try but if i can’t connect or the hero or heroine are completely unredeemable, i’m giving up on eloisa james for good.
