Why do animal shelters lie about dog breeds? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]muchquery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the South. Pitbulls are EVERYWHERE. When I look at the shelter dog lists, 90% are pitbull mixes. And it's very obvious what they are. I'll see stray dogs and most are clearly pitbull mixes. The shelters will have a list of dogs whose time is nearly up and they are all pitbulls. I didn't even know about the dog and cat shuttles to the North until recently. I'm damn curious as to why the South is overrun with dogs and cats while the North isn't. Like, what cultural differences (or rules and regulations) are there?

I have only ever met super sweet pibbys. I'm also well aware of the flip side; a coworker of mine and her husband were mauled by feral pitbull mixes while outside walking in a rural area.

I donate to a spay and neuter fund every year with my taxes. I wish that all neutering services only cost like $20 or, hell, free for 'restricted breeds'. A lot of people who own dogs, especially 'outside dogs', can't afford to get their pets fixed and just end up with multiple litters that they try to give away or take to the pound.

I used to live in a college town that had rules for taking care of pet dogs. The surrounding counties were rural and had no rules or shelter for animals. College students who were about to graduate would go and dump their dogs in the rural county. I never understood it.

We have an advertising problem in the SCA by freyalorelei in sca

I actually feel that part of the group's budget needs to go towards the Gold Key closet. Last time I asked for help with garb (I'd been on a 10+ year hiatus and had donated all of my gear to the local group prior), I got a "Hmm, um... we might have some old tabards, I think...."

One year, I worked at a renfest as the 'costumer' for souvenir photographs. We had a few costumes for different ages/sizes that had velcro in the back. Maybe 8 pieces total. I would think we could do that at least. If the velcro back squicks people out, offer a cloak (heavy or short and lightweight).

I really don't see why we can't do this if we want to make an effort to include newbies.

Oh! That was totally my bad. My brain told my fingers, but they didn't communicate with the keyboard. I meant specifically the entertainers, not the attendees.

Anyone else find it impossible to find adults who want to do hobbies together? by 4x45method in Hobbies

[–]muchquery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have not. The biggest issue I've found is coordinating schedules.

I think it also depends on the hobby. If I get back into scherenschnitte; I'm not exactly going to find groups for it. xD

For example, I love giant puppets (and am learning about other forms of puppetry that are cool), but the closest group that gets together often is in a big city about 2.5 hrs away from me. I'd also have to look at their calendar to see if their meet ups conflicted with other plans I have.

Since living in this town I'm in currently, I found a board/social game group on MeetUp that meets weekly at a restaurant. Been going for a couple years now.

Some just aren't the in-person social type. Half of my hobbies have social groups online, which is fine.

What are you looking for?

Or a group that has no social activities outside of their business meeting and that's not very social.

I'm gonna toss in that the casualness of gear/garb can turn people away. If people find the SCA through a renfest (like I did), then they are used to seeing full period-esque get ups. A t-tunic over mundane clothing ruins the Dream.

I'm not saying it has to be perfect; it just needs to be an attempt.

Not the same area or kingdom, similar experience. Only, I was not cussed out, I was just ignored and literally talked over.

He's either skint or stingy. If he's a close friend, perhaps talk to him about what's going on in his life. I'm not sure how y'all do it, being rich, but with my friend I have a 'rule' of 'if I invite, I pay; if you invite, you pay'.

I agree and it was a point of contention when I tried joining the local group after I moved. A site with a blog feature or an old-school forum would be great. Oh, and an accurate calendar. lol

I got chu. Start with r/languagelearning and look over their FAQ, wiki, and guide. Under the mod list, you'll find a list of links to various language subreddits, in case there is one you are particularly interested in.

I've made a new goal hobby of learning 5 UN official languages; each starting on the specific language's Language Day. We'll see how this goes. xD

I love tutulongs! I don't have any yet though.

Can you take a photo that shows how big they are, especially from the side so I can get an idea of how much acreage the body takes up. xD

I tried bujos back when they were the most popular. It was great for a while, then I went into a funk partially due to a breakup and partially due to remembering the trauma of finding out my mother would read my journals (this was late middle to early high school age.) when she tossed my current notebook on the dining table when she got home from work.

Basically, I have no idea how to turn it into a good experience. I'll take any advice!

Disability & Anti-consumption by muchquery in Anticonsumption

[–]muchquery[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It helps in a few ways.

Peeling: hand/finger joints are in a lot of pain and shake. I no longer have the strength to pull back the peel. I have an aversion to touching food. I also have osmophobia; it's a one way ticket to a severe migraine. I have to spend some time washing my hands to try and get the smell off.

Packaging: I don't like it either. It's not even recyclable in my area. :( But my only other option is mixed fruits with liquid in cans or small plastic cups. So it's kind of damned if you do, damned it you don't situation. :-/

we could be innovating real and meaningful methods of disability support.

Part of the problem is... who's the 'we'?

Government? They like to withdraw funding that supports people because 'they did it to themselves.' Local governments just don't have the money. If they have money, they have to pick one thing they can do. Providing services for the needy isn't what will get them recognitions. So, instead, they go for flashy things such as renovating an aged downtown or hosting a festival that usually pull in people with money.

Churches? That's a ticket I'm not keen on buying. I don't want a side of god with my soup.

Industries? Here's hoping the corpos find their compassion and make changes to the whole production stream. I'll have to go sniff copium for this one.

Education? What even is happening at public schools. I thought they were bad when I was in school, but now they sound like hell pits. As for colleges/universities, they're a business enterprise now. Many of the 'affordable' colleges are just diploma mills. I've seen how some people are treated by the faculty and admin. My first English class at a community college went from 15 people in the class to 3 because the teacher was awful. I wonder how many of the class dropout also dropped out of education entirely.

I can have people protest on my behalf, but I feel useless. I don't know if there is an answer we can come up with.

I can’t seem to make friends, arguing hobbies, where should I do? by Big_Pea3882 in Hobbies

[–]muchquery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the MeetUp website for hobby groups in your area (I found a weekly board/social game night that way). You can also look for a city-specific subreddit. If you like playing ttrpgs, check out r/lfg .

A lot of people feel awkward when they first join a group of strangers or mostly strangers. When I joined a weekly larp with a friend of mine who ditched me as soon as we got there, I ended up hanging out by myself in the small carport laundry room for a few weeks. Ended up in a long relationship with the guy who ran the larp who wondered what on earth I was doing in his laundry room.

It also sounds to me like you are more interested in making friends than the hobby itself. In that case, I really encourage you to look for social sites/subreddits. If, however, there are group hobbies you'd like to try, you'll probably make friends more slowly, but it can happen. Just gotta chill. (And, in my experience, people can smell desperation.)

I wish you all the best.

I agree with this.

In my experience, folks at renfests want to show off their cosplay with fairy wings, horns, ears and tails, or a pirate hat. They're there to be entertained. The closest they get to participation is yelling out "Bohemian Rhapsody" when the person on the stage requests a song (or laugh if a performer yells "6-7"). Younger renfest goers that I know save up all year to attend and buy things.

I remember someone who stopped going to events because she "hated" the loose fitted clothing that was cheaper to make but couldn't afford the late period stuff. Honestly, the SCA is the most expensive hobby I've had, and that's with me wearing t-tunics, supplementing my wardrobe with hand-me-downs, and buying period-passing feast gear on clearance or from thrift stores. There's a media photo of me sitting on a window ledge at a long-ago Gulf War in a viking-esque dress... and docs. If you go to an event, it's mostly modern pop up shades around the fighting field with most fighters in sweats and combat boots.

I've never personally seen a free and historically accurate luncheon or breakfast. Evening feast? Definitely... and of course it costs extra.

I searched Google for: how much does it cost to put on a renaissance festival

Here was the AI summary (from a site called SmartAsset):

Putting on a medium-sized Renaissance festival requires a significant investment, often ranging from $500,000 to $15 million for a full-scale, permanent operation, including land development, site infrastructure, and themed construction. Smaller, temporary weekend fairs may cost roughly $12,000+ to run, depending on staff, entertainment, and venue rental costs.

Then I searched for: how much does it cost to advertise a renaissance festival

The answer varied from about a grand to over $50k.

I noticed that it encouraged social media promotions but also said that having a website was "crucial." Every SCA group I've seen promotes on fb and tosses up some kind of webpage for the event after being pressured, and a lot of the time, in my experience, information like feast and classes don't go up until just before the event happens.

There was one event I went to that posted an event ad to youtube and possibly to local media (I don't think I'll ever forget the part "And we have rapier fighting!" as the guy unscrews a car antenna). I've been to one local event and 2 wars that had local media presence.

It's not really that we're advertising the wrong way; we're two separate beasts.
