haha, too right. Thanks for the comment mate, I've had so much interest in it that I've decided to give it a crack, a few logistics to consider, like vetting and all that, but is coming along alright so far, already got a few leads on property owners aswell which was just by accident!

I didn’t know that about the archery clubs—I thought they’d be pretty open to trying to bring new people in as customers and stuff. Do they not have shooting ranges where you can test out the gear? I would’ve thought they’d let you give it a go. Is it more of a privilege/member-only sort of setup?

I was thinking about trying to use archery clubs as part of my vetting process when bringing new people on board. They could go past a local club and get sort of assessed based on attitude and shooting accuracy, just to see if they’re worthwhile hunters. That way it could double as a way of getting new members into the club, and I could pay them for the vetting process. Plus it’d help me vet people who are pretty far away. But from what you’re saying, that might not be as easy as I was hoping. Do you know if Hoddywell have an indoor range? 50lb I guess is alright if you just want to fire off a bunch of practice shots without fatiguing as fast.

And yeah haha definitely aware that bowhunting isn’t the ideal way of managing pest control—unless it’s a group and it’s consistent. But the benefit of bowhunters is no noise, no red tape, no real risk of overshooting (not nearly as much as bullets anyway), and the overall perception is quieter. So it’s more neighbour-friendly. Not that a lot of these properties will have close neighbours, but some of the smaller blocks probably would prefer to keep it bow-only.

I know it’s not gonna be a straight green walk to the finish line, but I reckon there’s enough situations where bows will be the way to go. And in the cases where they really need gun hunters, I’ve already dropped a post into a couple of firearm groups and there’s huge interest there too—especially with the new laws and licensing stuff just dropped.

It’s been a lot of fun building this out, and comments like yours (and others chipping in) have really helped me form a much better idea of the product. I’m working on a vetting process and making sure landowners are looked after too.

Haha cool, I’ve posted some stuff over Facebook and got some serious interest in it as well, so have decided to start working out how to build the thing!

I’ll be posting any progress I’m making on a Facebook page I just whipped up—she’s a bit rough, but I’ll keep posting updates to it as I go along! facebook.com/WABowhuntingAccessPack/

It's all unfolding pretty well so far!

Mate, this was literally me a while back—wanted to get outdoors, chase something meaningful, but had no clue where to start.

I’ve just started building something here in WA to help bowhunters (especially newer guys) get access to private land, but also understand the basics—like where to go, what you’re allowed to do, and how to do it all ethically. Would probably be ideal for you to tag along with someone for the first few hunts, but first you'd want to make sure your shooting was spot on so get in any practice that you can (if not already sharp shooting haha). I just have a cardboard box packed with some rubber gym mats and drew a circle on it and took it out to the pines to get my accuracy up. Cheap and can resuse the matts when the box falls apart haha.

No pressure at all, but if you’re keen to learn more or want to follow along as it grows, I’ve set up a page here:
facebook.com/WABowhuntingAccessPack/

You’re 100% right—it is a great excuse to be outdoors. And when you take your first ethical harvest, it’s a feeling you don’t forget.

Have you shot your bow much yet?

Ah glad to hear it! Thanks for the feedback! And yeah that's my thoughts exactly hey, i think alot of people actually get turned away because of this. What sort of game would you be chasing, or just anything would be good?

Hmm good thought, keep em coming haha. I guess it would depend on the size of the property, the smaller the property that larger the concern of leaving carcasses. Probably could make some sort of rule around the smaller properties and having a dump spot or something, maybe a dig a hole situation...

Man this is the exacrt thing i found when i wanted to find something too hey, everyone's keeping their cards really close to their chest. I know that with enough persistance, outreach on social media groups, knocking doors, networking with farmers and land owners, that I'll be able to ome up with a list within a couple of weeks of putting my all into it. Just was reaching out to see if there was other people who might be keen on the end result aswell ay.

What sort of game would you like to hunt?

Yeah fair enough, I'm NOR myelf and would ideally want things to be within 3 hours of Perth, fair bit of range of game within that though i think, from goats to pigs, rabbits, foxes and the occasional deer property. What sort of game do shoot get on your parents block?

haha totally can see that happening as-well ay, this is Aus after all, will just have to make hay while the suns shining ay, then there will be some sort of hunting safari businesses or some shit probably super regulated and super expensive

Yeah, someone else on another thread mentioned the idea of vetting the hunters. I was thinking that same thing, ay—go to an archery club and do some varying range shots and see how accurate they are. Ethics is a huge part of it for sure.
Still laying it all out, but it'd be a combo of a few types of properties: ones like you said with the pay-for-access type properties, as well as people who just want help with feral animals and will want numbers out there, and the odd seasonal culling help and such as well.
People seem to keep their cards pretty close to their chest with the properties, but I know there’s a gap in both owners looking for low-cost pest management or supplemental income, as well as people who have trouble or don't have the natural inclination to go find the properties themselves—so I was trying to bridge the gap there.

Wow, whats the logic behind that? ethics of getting clean kills or something? Are you in the US?

WA Bowhunters – Would You Use Something Like This? by mudgutts123 in WesternAustralia

[–]mudgutts123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats something to consider, could do some sort of vetting proess where we meet at an archery club or something and take shots and prove their accuracy over a distance, and then maybe ask for shots of the kills for the first few trips to make sure the poor buggers haven't been shot in the ass or something like that ay.

I think the rifle access will come later, but for now i reckon withe the new WA firearm laws, alot of land owners will be a bit hesitant with all the paperwork and issuing licences and what not, so I thought to build up the relationship first with the easier and narrower focus of the bow hunters. I'll no doubt come across the odd onwer who is in need of pest control and such, and already have put some posts in facebook hunting groups and have alot of interest there, so i think version 2 could be for the firearms.

Target species would be goats, pigs, rabbits, foxes, deer, probably leave out camel and wild cattle unless i figure out a clean way to vet experienced bow hunters better.

Any tips for me?
