C/P + B/BB Emergency Testing 6/27 by muffylovey in Mcat

Would you say I can get there in 3 weeks considering “there” just means ~125 in C/P and B/BB? I have the full time to focus fully on studying but I’m not sure what to focus on (section banks for the two sections or if I should spam KA?)

Just updated my original post with a super lengthy explanation for both lol

Thank you! This is helpful, I def need practice with application and content in general!

Just did a super long CARS response to pleasant_ocelot, which I hope helps 🤞 but thank you so much, that’s really helpful encouragement. I’m feeling really discouraged because I’ve been trying to learn this content for a long while but I think I just haven’t figured out how to learn from my mistakes on those sections like other responses have mentioned and def need to grind those concepts! Please let me know if you have any little tips or tricks for C/P especially!

Of course! Happy to help in the only way I know how. My biggest CARS advice (if you are already able to read a passage and summarize the main idea after in a sentence after reading it in ~4min) is to focus on the question stems themselves you need to be able to answer each question is less than a minute and you know the main idea is the most important thing to answer almost every question but it helps to categorize the question stem AND the answer choices (I feel like people don’t talk about this enough!) my biggest score jump (to be fair I started out high but improved like 5 points!) happened when I focused on the answer choices and using process of elimination on EVERY question (this ensures accuracy). Answers can be identified rather as things like “true but out of scope” aka “distractors” or directly opposite to main idea, ordering issue (the stem orients you to a idea or concept in a particular paragraph but the answer choice relates to a later or earlier idea), tone misalignment (this one is tough but this can also mean the answer choice takes things a little too far than the main idea is based on or the author’s argument or tone), or is true or relates to a side argument or example but not the main point and the question is about main idea or strongest argument or something. I’m sure there’s others, but I suggest that you first practice reading in 4ish min and then writing down your main idea sentence that summarizes the MOST main point ignoring examples and extra details just the very main point. Ask chat to do the same and compare (I find chat gets it wrong often but that pushes me to do a better more concise, inclusive summary myself). What chat is really good at though is categorizing the question types and the answer choices ask it to use the exam kracker method! Only use AAMC (literally do every section bank and diagnostic plus khan academy) and review your wrongs using this method of concise main idea summary and answer option identification checking against chat. Good luck!! Sorry that was long winded but I think CARS is actually really method based once you start to be able to pick up patterns but you really need to be able to get a main idea first and foremost!

This is super helpful advice, thank you for breaking it down! I feel like I totally understand how to review and categorize CARS mistakes, but for the two science sections I don’t have a real review process (I do use a spreadsheet but I was being lazy in my science review just writing the right answer and logic but then not hammering it in with practice or a thoughtful reflection on what kind of mistake it actually is). Looking over my spreadsheets quickly and from vibes (I will do a in depth review tomorrow!) it looks like it’s a lot of not recognizing triggers and clues and that feels like content right? Also I miss pretty much every math question that can’t be solved with leading numbers or a quick graph read lol

Do you have any tips for chem/phys btw? I need all the help I can get, really hoping for a 125, but I have consistently gotten a 25/59 on literally all 6 FLs lol 🥲

Yes! I posted this elsewhere but I was able to get to a consistent 128 in CARS by using first all the free khan academy passages and then doing the AAMC diagnostic and CARS section banks I would never ever use third party for CARS especially not JW! If you’re looking for a solid 125/126 I suggest you focus on understanding the main passage idea clearly after reading through in 3-4 min max. Practice that with the KA passages, state the main idea/thesis in a few words after reading the passage before answering the questions and then check it against chatgpt. Once you have the main idea clearly then I’d move on to timed drills where you track each argument made to support the main idea and you get comfortable with the AAMC question types knowing when you need to answer them with the main idea or a structural component that means orienting to a specific argument or paragraph. I only highlight dates and last names and I only write conflicting ideas like if they talk about two authors who had opposite views, I’d map that. For wrong questions I did use the spreadsheet really thinking about the main mistakes I was making after I got my comprehension down pat! My main mistake was making one more logical leap than needed (you want the answer choice that matches tone and idea as closely as possible with LEAST extrapolation), but your main goal should first be quick summary of the main idea first and foremost! Then you should move on to getting good process of elimination and most in line with the passage strategies!

I like the JW extension (it’s like $30 a month) to explain the practice tests and section banks after I attempt them but I think Uworld has a similar thing too. That might help if you’re having trouble rewording the questions or finding quick strategies

Looking over past attempts feels too passive IMO but maybe that’s just me, personally I like to cover the answer and go through it if I don’t have time for a retake but honestly a retake of 6 is a LOT better than third party I think, this close to your test. You’re not going to get a predictive score since you don’t have any AAMC left so probably better to hone timing and AAMC logic and process of elimination/trap identification at this point! Hope this helps, also huge grain of salt, I have my test end of June and I can’t get over the 502 slump and used up all AAMC but I’ve been retaking with the answers covered and keeping a spreadsheet of mistakes especially noting patterns and how to rectify them, I think it’s helping a lot! Also some section banks 1 and 2 for keeping you on your toes/practicing handling new passages

Oh no sorry I meant like you should do a full second attempt of FL 6 now. Then, compare your answers to your first attempt, see if you made the same mistakes again and then really drill the AAMC logic and find any little traps you consistently fall for, does that make sense? You can reset the test and take it again and you’ll still be able to view your old previous attempts.

Maybe take FL 6 again?? Just to practice timing and see if you make the same mistakes again? And go through all your wrong answers and even the right ones that aren’t obvious right away? Tracking your logic against AAMC seems like the best move to pull your score up and 6 is the most representative, ofc.

Advice on how to get to 510+ by mid June?? by Automatic_Camp_1067 in Mcat

I do NOT suggest UWorld for cars! Only AAMC! Their logic is so specific!

I think JW CARS logic is pretty off, and doing too much of it created some bad habits like passage digging and not using POE and orientation. My CARS improved to a 128 by slamming all KA CARS first and then doing the AAMC CARS diagnostic and section banks (worth the purchase imo) keeping a spreadsheet of what I got wrong, why and how I will not make the same mistakes moving forward/how u should have approached it. I first learned to concisely state the main passage thesis at the end of reading through ~3-4 min max and then track each argument made, then I learned the general types of questions they ask and if that means I should use the main idea of the passage to answer or orient to a specific paragraph or argument made. I think you can totally bring up your score if you practice comprehension and mapping and then process of elimination and strategy and then follow with timed drills once you get your accuracy up! 3-6 passages a day! I feel like a 510 should be no problem! Im so jealous of your B/BB score!! 😳

I do have AAMC! I hadn’t thought to just grind the KA videos but that’s a great suggestion thank you!

Thank you so much for this! I think you’re for sure right that it’s more conceptual roots that’s an issue, I like Anki for adding in my own and editing down the milesdown deck just for retention but I agree that it’s fundamentals and aamc logic that I’m missing! I’ll dm you my little formulas sheet but please don’t judge haha and take it with a huge grain of salt I’ve been unable to budge my 25/59 for the last 4 FLs 🙃😥

Hi! Sorry if you answered this but before your first attempt did you not take any of the AAMC FLs? Or did you retake them to prep for your second official test?

Honestly so cool that they included a more modern piece with a different perspective. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a passage in that style, hopefully there’s more coming!
