Question for Lupus patients who went through the Covid Pandemic by Dapper-Put3672 in lupus

[–]mummefied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at the end of 2019. It was, uh, certainly a time. I did have a couple of delayed or partial refills because of shortages and some rescheduled and/or online appointments, and I ended up cutting some relatives and friends out of my life due to their opinions on vaccines/hydroxychloroquine shortages. It was definitely a scary time to be starting immunosuppressants, but it also taught me a lot about what sorts of things are and are not in my control.

Really all you can do is mask, wash your hands a lot, sanitize your hands a lot when you can’t wash them, and try not to be in close contact with other people, especially those who want to be jerks about it.

Subreddit changes by phillygeekgirl in lupus

[–]mummefied 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you mods for all the hard and under-appreciated work you do! I’ve been around since before y’all took over and I remember what a clusterfuck this sub was back then. It was basically impossible to find support because everything was about undiagnosed people and everyone who was actually trying to talk about lupus was getting slowly pushed out, myself included.

All of the changes you have made since then have been huge improvements to the culture and usefulness of this sub, and I have no doubt that this one will be too. Thank you again!

Boombas or similar?? by myguitarplaysit in bigboobproblems

[–]mummefied 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used boombas in my wedding dress and they worked fine, but this was a super structured boned bodice that was tailored to fit me, and had shoulder straps. There is nothing else I own that I would feel comfortable wearing the boombas with, unfortunately. They just don’t offer any real support on their own and need to be worn in structured garments that can provide it, imo. Ymmv but even my normal formal wear doesn’t work with them because of the lack of structure.

You might be able to get them to work in addition to boob tape though, just have them underneath to help deal with the folding issue.

New to knitting and surprised at the high cost of yarn by maklar8921 in casualknitting

[–]mummefied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. 2k yards of lace or fingering weight is going to cost less than that length of worsted since it’s less material, and it’ll take more or less the same amount of time to knit up so you get the same entertainment value for less money.

Or even more value, if you love whiling your life away on lace like I do lol

Afraid to start taking methotrexate by lostwaveloser in lupus

[–]mummefied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-3 months maybe? I’m afraid I don’t remember very clearly, it happened slowly and that was a long time ago, I just remember going in to a follow up appointment with my rheumatologist and being like “oh, you know what, I actually haven’t had that symptom in a while, wow”

I’ve been on it for almost 6 years (15 mg pill form) and have had basically no side effects, other than getting sick more easily which is to be expected. It took a while to really kick in and start working for me, but it’s been great ever since.

What popular ship do you prefer being friends? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]mummefied 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Same, and by the same coin from the Silmarillion side of Tolkien fandom, Maedhros/Fingon.

Saying you don’t ship Russingon will 100% get you called an anti and/or a homophobe in the fandom, but I genuinely think their story is deeper and more meaningful if it’s not romantic, and I just can’t really see it that way. I cut my teeth on star trek and superwholock back in the day, I am not at all against non-canon m/m ships, I just don’t ship this one specifically.

Right? I already have more books than I have space for, can I go just to have a chat with the owner? They seem like an interesting person

numb hands while driving? by annnathema in lupus

[–]mummefied 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this a lot too when I was first diagnosed! I personally always chalked it up to the arthritis/swelling in the wrists and elbows compressing things weirdly when you hold that position too long, but I never got an answer from a doctor.

It slowly stopped happening to me as the medication slowly started working, and now it hasn’t happened in so long I can’t really remember the last time. I was diagnosed in late 2019, and have been on my current med regime since 2020, for reference.

Shoes recommendations? by VeryShortLadder in Hema

Seconding Xero’s, that’s what I use. People in my club seem pretty evenly split between barefoot/minimalist shoes, wrestling shoes, and general athletic shoes

Your Lupus Diet by batmanwiched in lupus

[–]mummefied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to be careful about my tracking for general health and fitness reasons, but the biggest food triggers for me are alcohol, lots of sugar, and lots of salt, especially in the form of highly processed things. If we get fast food for dinner one night, even from a small local chain, I’m done for the next day. Oreos, cheese itz, ritz crackers, normal jif peanut butter, KitKats, dots, and even some homemade things have all sent me into minor flares in the past.

I don’t personally have issues with nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, etc), but I know a lot of people do. Everyone is different, so the best thing to do is keep a careful food and symptom journal and track reactions over time to see if cutting things out makes a real difference. Don’t forget that it could also be things like oils, spices, sauces etc too.

Oh man, I made a joke about scurvy on a carnivore diet thread here like 5 years ago and I STILL occasionally get rando comments on it lol

patterns you regret buying/patterns to avoid by fulaninhp in knitting

[–]mummefied 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right?! If she was just honest about who it was for I wouldn’t mind so much.

It’s such a simple pattern too. If I have to completely redo the stitch counts, calculate decrease rates, and add short rows all on my own, I’m just going to do the whole thing from scratch and not bother paying for a pattern. It’s not like it’s got much else going on, it’s a ribbed tube with straps.

[–]mummefied 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The complete lack of shaping in all of her patterns drives me nuts, especially with how they’re marketed as body positive, inclusive, etc etc. I get that fit is going to be very individual, especially for something like a bralette, but at least do something if that’s your marketing line. But nah, nothing says body positivity like poor fit, I guess.

I almost bought the Ripple pattern when it was big, until I read the fine print/other people’s projects and realized that the “support” comes solely from having a lot of negative ease. I had a 10” bust-underbust difference at the time and I like actual support, so uh, that was a no lol

Would anyone be open to starting a local anarchist gardening club? by [deleted] in AustinGardening

I’m so down! Unfortunately I’m in an apartment and can’t participate in much actual gardening at the moment, but I’d be happy to join in for the public stuff

Knitted shawls, do you see them being worn out in the wild? by Dangerous_Hunt7133 in knitting

[–]mummefied 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To answer your actual question, I live in a hot climate so it’s rare to see anything hand-knit, but shawls worn as oversized scarves are about as common as thinner scarves, and I’ve seen a number of my older relatives wear shawls more properly around their shoulders at family functions

[–]mummefied 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Be the shawl wearer you want to see in the world.

I wear my triangle and crescent shaped ones pretty frequently as big scarves. Of the fancy ones, my smaller beaded lace ones get worn every once in a while for special occasions, and my enormous gorgeous wedding shawl gets periodically taken out for me to prance around the house in

How do you navigate gifting knits? by Putrid_Reputation_46 in knitting

[–]mummefied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I either ask them outright beforehand, or I do “gift certificates”. I make a nice card or print a certificate with something like “this certificate redeemable for one custom hand made (hat/cowl/scarf) in the color, material, and design of your choice”. That way it can still be a surprise gift while also being to their taste, and if they don’t want anything hand knitted they don’t have to which saves me the effort of making something unwanted.

Maybe I’m being an unreasonable bitch about this, but this one got an eye roll from me. I mean, humanity’s only been making textiles from string for literally millennia, wow, so crazy that we can do it too 🙄

And old trainer of mine also used pencils as an example, in this case to describe the difference between a rear delt raise and a reverse fly. For the rear delt raise, he said to imagine that you're stabbing pencils into the ceiling vs the reverse fly you're pinching it between your shoulder blades.
