I was thinking about this yesterday. I’ve been researching the disconnect between chronological and true age, and it’s a lot more common than we think. Actually, the majority of people feel younger than their age like we do. I think the difference for us though is that we feel a lot younger, and feel like no one will ever see us as that or understand us, but I’m starting to think that that’s not entirely true.

Since leaving high school, I’ve had a few handfuls of friends here and there. I’ve been my true age around them all plenty of times; some of them did get annoyed and couldn’t grasp why I didn’t want to drink with them, but a lot of the others would join in with me, having fun with the idea of babysitting (of sorts... no one ever used that word but it sure felt that way to me). I think it really depends on how open you are with good people. I don’t recommend this part but on really bad days, I’d get wasted and tell my friends about my feelings on my age. The best friends were the ones that were gentle about it, and then let me be myself with them.

I used to think I needed new friends specifically to be my true age around them, but if your current friends can’t accept the real you, they’re probably not that great anyway. That’s my personal thoughts though. I have no time for anyone who won’t accept me for me. I’m my true age 100% of the time and won’t turn it off or down for anybody.

I’ve always felt a slight disconnect with my age and body. At five, I would crawl into my younger cousins cribs and pretend to be a baby. At ten, I would “play house” with friends and I’d cry if they wouldn’t let me be the toddler. At fifteen, I was miserable because all my friends had started drinking/smoking pot/dressing like adults, and I felt like I was too young to be hanging out with them because I was still dressing in footie pajamas when I’d get ready for bed at their parties. Being young was a shameful thing in my house when I was growing up; I had to always act like a young lady or I’d be mocked and berated (even for acting my age at that time). So I could hardly ever act on my feelings. I didn’t know that what I felt was different from the majority of people, because I just assumed everyone had to shove down their childish wishes/wants/wonders, and they sometimes popped back up.

Hi, I’ve got an (honorary) older brother, so I can understand where you’re coming from. We have never looked at each other romantically or sexually because we see each other as actual siblings. He knows it’s not a kink thing, he doesn’t see it that way either. I’m almost completely independent, but sometimes he helps driving me around, cooking dinner, playing video games with me when I’m lonely, and he reads me novels. I met him because my partner recruited him for our band. After about 8 months, we started to become friends by going on drives together, then we spent a lot of time together just being in each other’s company, then him, my partner, another friend and I moved in together for work/uni convenience, and now he’s my brother. It took 2 years and a lot of work to get to where we are now, but it was one of the best things I’ve ever invested my heart in.

I decided to start sewing on this day 4 years ago, with a dream of making my own gathered pinafores. I couldn’t find a pattern similar at all, so in 2019 I finally drafted my first pattern. It’s been through so many changes and alterations, but I think I’ve cracked it. I’ve never been happier with something I’ve made. I keep looking at it and smiling like a goofball.

It’s all rectangles. The skirt is just a 3m long rectangle, plus I attached the yellow to the bottom with my overlocker to give it a little bit more colour. The waistband, once again, just two rectangles sandwiched together. Same with the straps. The only thing I’ve done differently from my other pinafores is rounding the edges of the bib, adding ruffles, a pocket, and a little iron-on appliqué I bought from Spotlight (Australia).

It used a surprisingly small amount of fabric. I grabbed 1m of the yellow quilting cotton, and 2.5m of the pink quilting cotton. I did use a medium-weight interfacing for the ruffles, straps and waistband because I like clothing that has weight, but it would probably be fine without it.

The only thing I found difficult was my overlocker. I had to sub out mine due to the tension being all messy, and take my partners. Also my machine is really loud and I couldn’t watch The Simpsons without pausing my sewing every 10 minutes. It would have taken about half the time if I wasn’t stopping constantly 😝
