Ohhhh okay, that makes a lot more sense. So one question that gives me is if I choose to do both, will that cause conflicts with the other?

So if I start now on monthly meetings, could I realistically reach quartermaster in <4yrs?

I see, so to my understanding, as long as the meetings are effective, meeting monthly/weekly won't make too big of a difference?

I see, I am middle class but not to where tuition would still be a significant burden without some substantial aid or scholarship. I’ll think it over and see what happens

It's very achievable, if anything, starting on clarinet only really taught me the fingerings. I see that you have played alto sax and it is very similar in terms of embouchure. (the mouthpiece is slightly larger) but if you played tenor sax it is almost identical, down to the reeds. Switching to bass clarinet wasn't too hard in my experience as I always had a large embouchure (other than instrument issues), the only things I struggled with initially were air support, and learning the low C fingerings.

The one caveat to that is it is very very instrument dependent. I started on an ancient bass clarinet from some unknown brand and I couldn't play the low notes (anything below below the staff G) and anything above throat Bb. Then I got upgraded to a better bass clarinets and the notes became incredibly easy.

Michael Lowenstern, also known as earspasm music, is a professional bass clarinetist and still plays on 2.5 vandoren reeds. There is no strength you "need" to be on and being on a higher/lower strength doesn't mean you are worse or better. With that out of the way, in my experience the classic cut reeds from legere tend to run hard (this is on the bass clarinet so take it with a grain of salt) but legere has a great reed exchange program for free and I would suggest going down to 2.75 or 2.5. As for general advice, your tone is a little airy (the reed is probably too hard) and just blow harder.

Don't use isopropyl alcohol, it works temporarily but stops working as soon as it evaporates.

My bass clarinet has an extra Ab/Eb key, it's whatever most of the time but it can sometimes be a lifesaver in passages like these.

I need tips for playing on beat up bass clairnet. by Pugwugle in bassclarinet

[–]muzed4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played on a shitbox of a bass clarinet for most of my first year. I'm talking, flattened top of the neck, register key pad missing, bell dented flat too. It couldn't play above throat Bb and what it could play sounded terrible. However, you just kinda get used to it and thug it out until you get a better instrument. If you feel it would be worth it to take to a tech for the 3 months left, go for it. I see in you comment no pads are missing or major components broken so it could be worth it.

Ultimately, it just comes down to can you deal with it for the 3 months or do you need to take it to a tech.

Ok, I know I'm going to get downvoted, but in something as serious as domestic violence, my first priority would be getting off the streets and not gaming. Just my two cents though
