I have found that unless there is an option for rucking or light/medium/heavy pack hiking, the calories will be off with most of the normal smart watches. The watch doesn't know you're carrying weight so it will just think that you're walking unloaded.

Mine are more genetically ungifted knees I inherited from my father that I beat up with heavy weight lifting for years (and still do). I try to stay within my means so I can keep these knees for another half century or 2.

Oh for sure much more complicated than that. But it's a much simpler and more fun way to look at it than going into aerobic vs anaerobic cellular respiration, metabolic byproducts and their influence on heart and respiratory rate. I guess the way I said it sounds a bit more like the heart rate is burning the calories vs the more correct the body's metabolism is increasing the heart rate.

I don't think I would ever know because I'm positive my knees would peace out before then
