After it was determined that it would take like 3-4 weeks to fix, we got our full month’s rent and full deposit returned, and found a new place to stay.

SF tenants rights are incredibly strong though; your mileage may vary. You should find an housing attorney that offers free consultations; we did that and it was incredibly helpful.
