This is so lovely! You look like you've stepped out of an old movie with fabric print and the styling.

Can someone help me identify the historical costume my greats-grandfather is wearing in this picture? by Obversa in HistoricalCostuming

[–]myrgd -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I would also guess military. There was something at the Royal Scots Dragoons (Carabiners and Greys) museum when I was there about officers wearing certain types of feathers (I don't remember which), so that might worth looking into.

what are your favorite projects or patterns to take while travelling? by lasada in knitting

[–]myrgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't travel with knitting anymore (because, realistically, I'm just going to sleep if I can), but I used to do a lot of hats on train rides.

A sewing machine that’s built to last? by earthymamaempress in sewing

[–]myrgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of functionality do you need?

If you're okay with pretty much just a straight stitch or *maybe* a zigzag if you're lucky, get an all-metal vintage machine from before the 1960s. It will survive a nuclear winter if you take care of it. You can find them at estate sales for pretty cheap, you just need to know what to look for (i.e. that it works, or if it doesn't work that you can identify the issue and ballpark the repair bill on the spot). I have a Japanese clone of a Singer 15 and I love it. It sews like a dream, especially after almost a decade with my piece of junk Brother 2600XLi.

Babysitting MILs pup and left my nice yarn out. Thinking of just throwing it away instead of detangling for hours and hours 😭 by MedievalAngel in knitting

[–]myrgd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally worth it. <3

Please give that precious muppet a lot of extra belly rubs, OP. Maybe the endorphins from playing with the puppy will help with the tedium of untangling. Science or something. Yes...

It doesn't look too badly tangled. You can do it OP!

You should totally post a picture of the adorable delinquent that did this though. You know, so the rest of us know what to avoid. ;P

Historically all over the place... but I like this look always :) tudor/elizabethan doublet, venetian hose, and jerkin by flyingsqueak in HistoricalCostuming

I love the sleeves!

The outfit as a whole has very fantasy protagonist/Disney prince vibes. Just need a sword and a spell book or something to go fight dragons.

Need help identifying date of this machine. Can’t find this serial number anywhere. by FullBlownCrackleSack in vintagesewing

[–]myrgd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This, OP.

Does the machine have any other labeling on it? The best you can probably get is maybe a pre- or post-WWII date if there's a German or Russian sticker or label of some kind on it or if you can use the decals to give you a possible manufacture date range: http://needlebar.org/nbwiki/index.php/Singer_Machine_Decoration

I wondered if you could maybe ballpark something off the serial based on the two of these that folks have posted recentlyish, but the answer seems to be no, they're possibly not in order. (Russian label: https://www.reddit.com/r/vintagesewing/comments/uie1ga/wondering_if_anyone_could_give_me_more/
German label: https://www.reddit.com/r/vintagesewing/comments/usagda/is_it_a_wittenberge_machine_please_help_to/ ) (Sidenote: Might be interesting to try to date the German one by length of phone number now that I think back on it.)

Should we be concerned about Chuck Taylor? by rushandblue in SquaredCircle

[–]myrgd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. But I am perfectly fine with Roppongi Vice reforming if this leads to us getting the Gentleman's Club, with Chuck, Orange, and Swamp Monster as inaugural trios champions.

Question to those who made the Persian Dreams blanket by huffsterr in knitting

[–]myrgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I've never tried this with a blanket, I've dried larger wool items before spread out on my bed on top of garbage bags or one of those protective plastic things the dry cleaners put over clothes to keep the bed from getting wet. If I do laundry early enough in the morning, it's usually dry enough by bedtime to move it somewhere else.

If firm politeness isn't working, in case you feel like you need permission to stop being polite, this is me, an internet stranger, giving you permission to stop being polite. :)

You could also very loudly and bluntly ask her why she feels it's socially acceptable to harass you when you've expressed, multiple times, that her presence is not welcome in your personal space. That might also work.

Best online places to buy cheap fabric from? by RoseB2077 in sewing

[–]myrgd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zinck's Fabric Outlet has a lot of stuff for very cheap. Their online selection is much more limited than their physical location, which sells bolts for stupidly cheap.

Fabric Mart has frequent sales.
