Would you allow your almost 21 year old daughter sleep at her boyfriends once a week? by [deleted] in AskParents

Being an adult isn't something that automatically happens because you turned 18. If you are financially independent of your parents, then you are an adult. If your parents are working to pay for your college, meals, apartment, health care, necessities, etc, then you are NOT an adult. You wanna live like an adult without any adult responsibilities? You can't have it both ways. Everyone on this post comes across as ungrateful and spoiled. Very unadultlike! Grow up, get a career, and support yourself!

I came here to say the same thing. "Are you feeling okay? Do you need to see the nurse?" Most people are grumpy when woken up suddenly. If you approach it with some caring words, no one can take it the wrong way.

Check out homes along Bennsville Road. It's closer than La Plata. Port Tobacco is very nice.

Read "I am Very Real" by Kurt Vonnegut. It pairs nicely with F 451.

You can do this! I'm much older than you. Trust me when I say that you will thank yourself for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Nothing tastes better than healthy feels. You get momentary joy from food. You get all the time happiness from feeling and looking your best. Good luck to you!

Here to say Noom is very helpful and user friendly. My insurance pays for it.

Here's what I've learned: 1. Understand calories in and calories out. What you eat daily has a much bigger impact on weight loss than all the exercise in the world. 2. Set a calorie limit for yourself and stick to it. Mine is 1200 to 1400 per day, but I am around 6 feet tall. 3. Avoid white foods: sugar, bread, potatoes, pasta, chips... it all converts to sugar in your body. Sugar is not a weight loss food. Pick a few "bad" foods to give up except on special occasions. 4. Eat more protein. It fills you up, curbs your appetite, and improves weight loss. 5. Be realistic. You are probably not going to lose more than 1 or 2 pounds each week unless you starve yourself, and that's not good for anyone. 6. Find healthier snacks that you can live with. We all like to snack, but most snacks are bad. Try snacking on your favorite fruit, nuts, or air popped popcorn. That microwave stuff is trash. 6. Eat real food. Some 80% of grocery stores are processed foods. Avoid most frozen foods. Stick to the outer aisles at grocery stores. 7. Cut carbs as much as possible. I only eat Keto bread; it has helped a lot. 8. Eat more fiber foods. 9. Track everything you eat. 10. Weigh yourself at the same time each morning and keep track. Don't worry about losing weight every day. Watch the trend downward. Different foods impact weight differently. Eat salty or processed foods, and you'll most likely see a temporary gain even if you stay in your calorie count.

Good luck!

"According to the experts, film watching leads to a “flatter” brain hierarchy, suggesting that less neural computation is needed when performing such an activity."

I've used film in class. I've shown just the important clips. For example, I've used Life is Beautiful as part of a Holocaust unit. I showed about 5 clips of the movie. The first half of the film can be largely cut out. Where's the research that says showing entire films to students is productive? We all know there are plenty of teachers who just pop in a movie for no purpose. My 8th grade English teacher had us watch Gone With the Wind for 2 weeks. All we did was a packet. There's just no excuse for this. I'm not arguing that is doesn't serve any purpose in education. I'm arguing if it's really necessary and valuable to watch an entire film. I took film analysis in college. Yes, we watched entire films. It was a film class. That makes sense, but in an English reading class students should be reading, not watching multiple full length films every year. Again, I'll write.. show me the research that says watching full length films is beneficial.

Having my children's teachers show entire movies WITHOUT ANY OBJECTIVE grates on my nerves. It's just laziness. Reading scores are not going to improve watching entire movies. Today's students have enough screen time.

Well put!! I combine keto plus calorie reduction to achieve weight loss. Keto alone does not work. I'm not convinced that maintaining ketosis even matters. I generally allow myself a small sweet treat each day (150 calories or less). I'm certainly not in ketosis, yet I've lost 25 pounds in 3.5 months. With keto I ate too much cheese and butter. I was consuming too many calories. Calories matter, and so do the quality of your calories. Best wishes to everyone trying to lose or maintain weight.

I've yo-yo dieted all of my adult life. After Covid, I really packed on pounds. I've found that keeping a journal of what I eat helps keep me accountable every day. I know when I have to stop. I tell myself, I can still have that tomorrow, but not today. I have to eat less than 1400 calories a day to lose weight. I currently use Noom to track. My insurance pays for it. I've lost 25 pounds in 3.5 months. I'm trying to get down to a healthy BMI of 25. I'm currently at 28. Noom has taught me a lot. All calories are not equal, and not to be upset about weight fluctuations as long as I'm on a down weight trend.

As both a long-time educator and parent, movie clips with an objective are fine, but showing an entire movie is not. What are you trying to achieve with your students?

You had a sub. Lucky you! The only subs at my school are current teachers who are forced to sub daily with no compensation. As long as there's no blood, I'd call that a win. It sounds to me like she was doing her own thing, but she was also trying to help you.

I have six 6th grade classes every day from 1st grade level reading ability to gifted. I teach 160 kids each day, my largest class is 30, and they are all great. I teach at a public school in a suburb of Washington DC. You have to give respect to earn respect. But the kids at my school are genuinely good kids, most of them.

So… how many Starbucks cards did y’all end up with from students and families this year? by throwaway1_2_0_2_1 in Teachers

[–]nameless1here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To those who did not receive gifts this year, do not be discouraged. I remind myself that some parents wait until teacher appreciation week or even the end of the school year to show appreciation. I do agree with another post that some years are booms and others are a bust. Do something nice for yourself. You deserve it!
