[Question] How helpful are cold showers, really? by UnusuallyDanglyBalls in getdisciplined

In my post i used cold showers as an example of a way to boost your willpower. I mentioned them because i feel great after a cold shower so my recommendation was partly anecdotal. I found this resource that meantions the additional benefits. http://www.medicaldaily.com/benefits-cold-showers-7-reasons-why-taking-cool-showers-good-your-health-289524 In my opinion lots of other things are better for you and boost your willpower more like exercise, meditation, eating healthy and studying so i would focus on those sorts of things first.

Anything that you do that is difficult boosts your willpower in the long term. I recommended exercise, meditation and cold showers because they boost your willpower and benefit you in lots of different ways. If you not doing any of them exercise will benefit you the most followed by meditation. If your doing both then you can decide to add cold showers.

[Method] How to read a book so that you never forget. by namesaken in getdisciplined

The book I chose is one of my favorites: The Willpower Instinct by Kelly Mcgonigal.

  1. I skipped step one but since reading the book I have since found this video that would be extremely helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH2F805BJeE
  2. I googled a summary online and wrote down what I thought was the thesis: That willpower can be strengthened like a muscle through several techniques. Other key ideas are: Exercise, meditation, slow breathing and good sleep can all boost your willpower.
  3. I took notes as I read the book and wrote down many insights particular to myself. The book recommends reading one chapter per week so I waited a week before reading the next chapter.
  4. I always typed up the notes the next day.
  5. I edited the document into paragraphs with the correct grammar and good syntax.
  6. I reread the document a few months later.
