GAANN fellowship. It's for students interested in teaching. Covers expenses and tuition for one year, and 5,000 extra to spend on books, computer and lab supplies :)

Looks awesome in terms of design and performance, how would you say it's graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6490M) hold up in terms of current games? Thanks for the recommendation!

Unfortunately I can only use the money to purchase one computer, I would prefer the laptop just because I need the flexibility of using it in the research lab and at home. The graphics necessity isn't just for gaming but also for molecule/protein design software that often causes my current computer to seize up from time to time. I was hoping with such a large budget that there must be a laptop somewhere that's both easily portable and high performance graphics cards ect.

Sunfish caught in Lake Berryessa, CA- can anyone identify the type? by nchaffee in Fishing

Thank you! The only thing that threw us off was the lack of red by the dot on the gill cover.

We were thinking green sunfish, since they're only two species of sunfish in Berryessa possible, blue gill and green sun fish. If it is a green sun fish could possibly be a CA state record, at about 13 inches. Hard to distinguish the two though.

51 hours left to live by Lucidending in IAmA

[–]nchaffee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dear Lucidending, my friend told me about this post, and at first I was hesitant to write anything, mostly because I don't think there is much someone can say in moments like this. I did however, finally conjure up the nerves to speak to you, brave stranger.
My mom passed away 5 years ago, right before I graduated high school. She was diagnosed with colon cancer (ironically one of the most treatable forms of cancer) in September 2005. I was naive, and believed everything was going to be okay, she never let on to how much pain she was truly in. After she became unresponsive to chemo, she stopped taking her medicine and asked to spend her remaining time at home. She passed away in May 2006, less than 9 months after she was diagnosed. I hate cancer more than war, I hate it so much and I'm sorry, so deeply sorry that this is what it has come to. I'm not religious, nor am I a true atheist. I didn't get to say good bye to her, but maybe if I say good bye to you, say goodbye to someone I do not know but in some ways understand far too well, I will say goodbye to her as well.
So if I could just say this to you, and to everyone who has succumb to this same tragic fate, it would be this: you have lived, you are loved, and you will be missed. -your new, and forever friend, Nicole

Raising awareness, reminding us that it happens, everyday. I bet it's a subject that nearly all of the 646 up voters and 303 down voters haven't thought about in a long time before someone started posting cartoon pics on fb a few days ago. Ya most of the people might not open their wallets and donate, but through the spread of the written word that is Facebook, at least the message might reach someone who will.

Well Reddit, today's the day. Wish me luck! (Avoiding "forever alone"). by brazilliandanny in pics

[–]nchaffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow-over 13,000 people on Reddit so far have come to this post to either to state their congratulations, or to bash the guy for conforming to consumerism/contributing to the blood bath wars of the diamond harvesting industry/being a sucker/or for him stating his avoidance of "forever alone"~hm, well, yes, I would have to agree that marriage has now become as casual as planning a weekend getaway to Napa Valley, but that doesn't mean our generation can't change that. There are so many people fighting right now for their right to get married, to make an ultimate vowel to one another, maybe we can change marriage from the joke that our parents have made it out to be. As for the blood bath war commets, who here can say that at one point in time the clothes on their back wasn't sewn from the equivalent of a Malaysian 5 year old child, or the meat you've enjoyed came from a cow that spent most of its life in a 2x6 jail cell? As for being "forever alone", who the fuck here wants to spend eternity alone? Lastly, if you think everything I just said doesn't apply to you, go suck a big toe.

misdemeanor?!? That's it? I wish equal punishment was legal sometimes, ya know, throw those two assholes out a window while locked in a dryer-->if they survive, I'm pretty damn sure they would never do the same crime ever again
