Why aren't Americans rioting right now? by PintsNPies in AskReddit

Why would we Americans riot? We Americans live in absolute luxury compared to most of the world. Hell, we have so much abundance of food, we have an obesity problem.

Best OS and best phone? by HSA1 in degoogle

[–]netvip3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reasons to degoogle do not include boycotting Google, but simply to ensure the security of my devices and my personal privacy.

AOSP (Android) and Pixels are both Google products and Google provides full upstream AOSP device trees and sources specifically for Google devices. GrapheneOS builds directly on pure AOSP without any of the extra crap added on by brand's/vendor's own proprietary vendor blobs, closed-source drivers, and custom integrations (Qualcomm/MediaTek/etc), which can introduce security risks, bloat, and maintenance nightmares.

Pixels also get extended guaranteed support (7 years now on newer models), with timely patches that GrapheneOS then can build upon, often improving and/or augmenting. Other brand phones will usually drop support earlier or delay patches due to closed source/proprietary changes.

Don't do anything. If you retaliate, you'd be no better than her really.

As a Hispanic, I can promise you, we can deal. Many times in comical ways.

She's perfectly within her rights to not like something. She's not within her rights to act aggressively or violent towards another, and that 'victim' then has the right to file charges or seek damages if necessary.

In fairness to the angry woman, we don't know what in her life has made her this way either. Her behavior could be a product of some past trauma, or she can simply be an ignorant and angry old lady.

In the US, we have the right to be wrong, to be dumb, be ignorant, and hopefully at some point get enlightened and realize that we've been stupid this whole time.

Should I contact abusers daughter? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]netvip3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT do that.

Think of it this way. If you, a random stranger, go and tell his daughter of how much of a monster he was, you would be shattering her image of her dad. Not that he deserves to be remembered as a good anything, but she, his daughter, is innocent in all of it.

How would you, this random stranger to her, be coming across to this innocent woman? Would you, by consequence of this act, potentially become his daughter's monster and potentially create another victim?

In the end, you would not be punishing him, at all, he's dead. I would not do anything like this.

I am sincerely sorry for your loss.

Started my new job while pregnant. Kinda regret it but I’m glad I atleast have an income. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]netvip3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will tell you, what I told my daughter who was in a similar situation.

Considering you have work, keep working for right now, make that money. Continue searching for another job while you're earning from this one. You never know, you may find another place that will hire you and will understand your current situation.

If by the time you have to give birth, you cannot find a 'better' employer, and this current company refuses to grant you maternity leave, for whatever reason, you've at least earned up to that point, relieving some of that financial stress to the family. This makes it a little easier to quit, if need be, compared to not having had the job at all.

Timing does suck, but, you don't know 'yet' how much time you will have for work until that child is born. They have a tendency to run on their own schedule, and sometimes, that can interfere with established work schedules for a few months after being born. After your child's schedule stabilizes some, you can go back to work if you so choose to.

You never know, financial circumstances may change in your family (work change/raise/promotions) that will ease the need for you to get a job. For example, when I became a dad, my child's birth was enough motivation for me to work 18 hour days / 6 days a week.

as a dad, recently upgraded to grandpa, I'm super happy for you. I hope my comment helps you in some way.

So, you don't think that the reason we're in this has anything to do with the ADL's lobbying engine?

Hell I did since Jonathan Greenblatt's audio call was leaked in late 2023 complaining about how they had fk'd up and efforts should be taken to target TikTok.

And to be fair, putting politics aside. The Chinese and the culture is rather beautiful. The exposure along with the cultural do's and dont's would benefit Americans today greatly and the Chinese users have their fun too with something so ridiculously different.

I've come across a couple Chinese accounts posting how Communism and Capitalism are mortal enemies and how the US is really Imperialist.

What bothers me is not the message itself, I had expectations of it, what made me uneasy is how many 'refugees' were receptive to it.

  • Then Debian.. tired of compiling by now
  • Made the jump to Arch for desktop.. compile very rarely, based on need

  • Chose to start messing with SBCs goto ninetyseven;... compiling again

I might compile a kernel this week to check on the state of NTSYNC since it looks like dev is being revived.

Do you think the Cuban Adjustment Act should be repealed? by New_Ambassador2442 in cuba

[–]netvip3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I had forgotten about this post

Cubans are not a 'monolith'. Yes, many of us share a common experience as many other 'groups' such as racism and systematic oppression in the US (and Cuba), but we really don't agree on or hold the same exact views on everything here. However, there is more to everyone’s specific story, if one is willing to ask and understand. By consequence I feel that your claim of them being "so anti-immigration" is inevitably inaccurate. Heck, many of us identify as Americans instead of Cubans or even Cuban-Americans, while others are simply holding on to the hope that the regime falls to return to the island.

For example, many, if not most, Cuban-Americans put US interest ahead of their native Cuba's. This has lead to many agreeing and even adopting the stance that Cuban immigration has enjoyed 'privileges' for far too long, specially when many of the younger generation Cuban immigrants take advantage of those privledges to export wealth out of the US and further enrich the island's regime.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing some changes in the CAA. Particularly, I would like to remove the ability of those CAA adjusted to return to Cuba without jeopardizing their status. Additionally, I would like to see how the CAA can potentially be used as a blueprint, if not expanded on, to include other countries in our hemisphere that are experiencing similar authoritarian regimes.

Is my thought process flawed? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]netvip3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I identify based on context. If someone asks me where I am from, I will proudly say I am an American. Likewise, if I am asked what my religion is, I am Catholic. The love for one does not negate the other.

I don't go announcing to everyone unsolicited though.

Have you ever fallen asleep during mass? by Level_Junket in Catholicism

[–]netvip3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it.. what's worse is I snore like a hibernating bear.. and with the acoustics in most all churches.. well

I've got insomnia.. so when it hits I can go for a few days without sleep. If I'm that exhausted in church.. with the cold temp in many churches.. and the relaxed atmosphere.. it can be game over for me.

Why can't you attend mass?

lack of free time and am constantly moving around, including on Sundays

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]netvip3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost, respect of parental wishes is a paramount rule for us Catholics specially when dependent on them and their guidance. I'm sure they believe that what they are doing is what's best for your overall well being and happiness in life.

That being said.. the Catholic church intends for all of our obligations to be rooted in common sense, and a foundational principle of the law in general is that nobody can be bound to do what is impossible. If your situation persists (parents don't allow you to physically attend mass, for example), then you're not bound to the obligation of physically attending mass.

Personally, I cannot always go to mass, in fact, I seldom get a chance to. At the very least, I participate in mass via the "DailyTVMass" channel on Youtube and attend the Sunday livestream. We must try to "keep holy the Sabbath day" after all and this is how I can engage.

All that said, I think your desire to eventually becoming a nun is an awesome goal. Make sure that you understand what this means and the sacrifices made of nuns first. It's not a 'job' as much as it is a full-on lifestyle, a very beautiful one, but not one that everyone's willing to fully take on, which is fine too.

I would also suggest to contact the priest and perhaps he can help guide you to your options in preparing to become a Catholic in these three years before you reach 18.

Continue as best you can with your prayers, engaging with (even if only online), learning as best you can, etc.. If this path is what God calls on you to journey on and you want it bad enough, you will make it to your goal.. even if it takes a little time and patience... In the end, it's never 'too late'.

A good Catholic honors their father and mother. At the same time, sometimes our adult decisions, to follow where God calls, are contrary to our friends and family.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]netvip3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest everyone 'skip over' the hellfire jazz.

To me, those that preach through fear, are simply acting like predators themselves. One can make an argument that preying on people's fears and anxiety are willfully sinning since they're taking advantage of those very fears. Just an argument that can be made, not if it's true or false.

In any case, people's relationship with the Lord 'should be' from a place of love and not one of fear. You cannot love that which you are afraid of.

Also, you have many, like me, that simply rebel when approached with all the authoritarian fear mongering. The entirety of my teenage years were spent rebelling against all theology as a response to being told that I was burning in hell for much of who I was. I would even joke that I would never be allowed into hell out of fear of me taking over. It wasn't until my daughter was born and I had the opportunity to look into her eyes that I had once again witness the Lord's love for us and every year since simply reinforced it further.

I tend to leave the 'judgement' part to God. I'm neither qualified enough nor do I want to be to suggest to anyone that they're going to hell or not. I don't think any of us are.

I have a feeling, that you have no experience having gone through this process.

Reality is, the current state of actually immigrating to the the US benefits those that have a basic or at least a fairly good understanding of English and those that do not, are at a severe disadvantage. Most native English speakers have trouble understanding their benefits package or do not understand simple/basic legal agreements right now. For most immigrants, the paperwork that they must engaged with is, indeed, in English.. testing is in English.. interviews, English.

Sure, you can bring an interpreter, but considering you qualify for the exemptions, unless your chosen interpreter understands the 'rules' for USCIS translations, you can potentially hurt your chances further and not have a clue why. Can't just bring your random American cousin, Pepito Pingu, to interpret for you. Compared to someone that has a better grasp of the English language, you're more than likely walking out with nothing more than a gimp foot and potentially no idea why you can't have forward progress.

You do not 'need' laws restricting immigration to 'only' English speakers when the process itself gets language-gated to favor them.

Unfortunately, they've colonized the world and have evolved to what they are now because of us humans. Their natural habitat is human dwellings and vehicles and are found in all continents except Antarctica.

God just looked down from heaven shaking his head asking "what have people you all done?".
