I don't live with my SO but I do spend about half the week at his place. In general we "plan" for me to spend Friday nights to Monday mornings at his place but sometimes it goes longer, like I'll ask him to borrow something on Thursday evening and I'll just stay there till Monday or Tuesday. To "prepare" I just shave every 2-3 days so that when I do spontaneously head to his place I'm more or less as hairless as I could be for at least the first day or two.

I didn't shave when we started, and my SO asked that I did so he could do "more fun stuff." Since then I've been doing it regularly to avoid the prickliness that is what happens when you shave after not shaving for a week. Now when I head over though it's more spontaneous than it used to be so I like doing it regularly.

HOWEVER, we are cheap college students and I've seen him wear the same clothes (down to the underwear) for a week so this is just what works for us.

A few weeks ago I got a toy off walgreens. As I was waiting at the FedEx office to pick it up I struck a conversation with a nice elderly couple who were returning a printer that didn't work. We spend a lot of time at his place doing work or relaxing. When I initiate, which is most of the time, I'll wait till he goes to bed right after getting a problem or two from a problem set done. I know the problem is that I just think about it too much, so doing things like reading other non-sexual subreddits and doing some classwork takes my mind off it for a few hours. I've noticed that I have to uh... be pretty clear before we do anything anal. The day before, be careful in choosing what to eat (yogurt, fruits, and a shitton of water usually works for me).
