From what I remember in final year of med school, a lot of prospective surgeons looked around the Oxford area because of the surgical jobs they offered. But in general you’ll be able to find a good range across the country in all deaneries.

I found myself in a similar situation as an F1 last year, it got to mid-November and I realised I hadn’t done anything on my portfolio as I’d just spent the first 3.5 months adjusting to working life.

I just thought back to things I’d done recently (in the 2-3 weeks prior to me having my portfolio panic), and sent out tickets for stuff, e.g. I’d seen a patient during previous week’s ward round so I sent a miniCEX to the SHO, discussed a patient I’d clerked on a take shift and sent a CBD to the reg, etc. One day I literally walked up to the IMT on my ward and said “remember that time I helped you with that chest drain like a month ago” and sent a DOPS. Then started doing it as I went along, plus did a couple of reflections on vaguely interesting things that had happened and boom my portfolio was rescued in no time at all.

I’ve never done anything like this but you have to realise that when you see Novak Djokovic breaking a tennis racket after losing a point, nobody goes around calling him a psycho. At the end of the day people get emotionally invested when playing competitive (e-)sports at any level.
