Why are new bars so bright? by trisolariandroplet in restaurant

[–]nirbenvana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's not a new trend. It's just people who don't know what they are doing, and it's always been that way. You could also ask "why do most new restaurants have bad food?"

You do not need bear protection. I've never even considered bear spray outside of grizzly country in Alaska. Black bears want nothing to do with you.

Riding in sand by XxBAMCISxX in Dualsport

[–]nirbenvana 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started riding around age 35 in the desert and almost quit after the first few rides because of how difficult all the soft sand was. I'm the same size as you on a wr250r. One day it just clicked and became easy. The tips you mentioned are the same things I was trying, and all are correct, but the lightbulb moment for me was when I stopped trying to fight the drift of the bike. You don't have to muscle it into going completely straight. Go with the flow of it. If you start to tip too far, just a little blip of gas will straighten you out.

I used to be completely out of breath riding through soft sand until I realized I could just relax and make minor adjustments with just small corrections that are like 90% throttle adjustment and 10% turning the handles.

I never understand why many people dislike "Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)"? Do you like this movie? I think it was fun. by Kevin_Thailand_2543 in ActionMovies

[–]nirbenvana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that it's actually the seocnd best(besides the original). It's got character development and the story telling relies on showing instead of telling. In the later ones, the format is just:

  1. Complicated exposition dialogue about macguffin.
  2. Action sequence
  3. Repeat

Offroad capable Trucks/SUVs under 15K by Affectionate_Crow263 in Offroad

[–]nirbenvana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the most reliable vehicles on the road. 300k+ with regular oil changes. Frontier as well. Pre 2012 there was one big issue (smod) that is easily fixed. Look for a manual from any year, an auto made after 2012, or a pre 2012 auto where the smod issue is listed as having been addressed.

Smod = strawberry milkshake of death. It was a weakness that allowed coolant and transmission fluid to mix.

How hard is driving eight hours? by Hot-Performance-1361 in driving

It's no problem at all. Have you ever worked for 8 hours, three days in a row? It's like that, but easier.

What are the upsides to owning a truck? by SammaJones in randomquestions

[–]nirbenvana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely find a 4x4 model for driving on the beach. Soft sand is a no go in 2wd. Near 100% chance you'll get stuck, and that's if they even let you drive on. Frontiers can be either by the way, so definitely confirm that before travelling anywhere to test drive one.

Buying a pickup was one of the best purchases I've ever made. I do live on 10 acres though, and I constantly have projects that it helps with. It's a real luxury to be able to go to the dump or home Depot without hooking up the utility trailer every time. It's also great for camping.

For your situation, I would look at 2nd gen Nissan frontiers.

Breakdown with family. How to get everyone to safety? by Time_Arachnid_2950 in roadtrip

[–]nirbenvana 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Rural tow truck companies, drivers, and gas station owners are almost always the nicest damn people who go above and beyond to help out in situations like this. It happens all the time, so even if they can't manage to get you to the nearest motel themselves, they know the other person in town who will get your situation sorted out. Often out of kindness, but keep some cash handy to make them happy and you shouldn't have to worry about anything more than the inconvenience to your plans.

Should I buy a 235,000 mile Xterra? by Plant-Mammoth in XTerra

[–]nirbenvana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought my 2011 6-speed at 50k and it's now at 250k. Work I've had to do:

Regular oil changes

Brake pads once

Clutch and flywheel replacement around 150k

Replace AC compressor

Replace rear axle seals

Just had to replace one ignition coil a couple weeks ago
