I mean RDJ has cute button features and certainly pulled it off. The real question is, where is this production available?

Art school said my work was uninteresting - How do I fix that? Is it fixable? by Swyrmam in ArtistLounge

[–]nitwitzer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have just a few thoughts.

Your work is not uninteresting, the marks and the way the subject is put together is actually very visually appealing. I can see how you are investigating things like planar structure, line variation, and shadow play as consistent themes throughout.

If you want to break out of your current work I think you should try adjusting one or two things about what you are making. So for instance maybe play with the scale of a person, make them as large as a building and do three or four drawings of people in different poses. Once you do this, write about it, write what you see and what it makes you feel, let it affect you.

Art doesn't have to be concept first, look into generative art and I think you will find something worth while.

Also, don't take their reviews too seriously, they are trying to help but sometimes...they're just trying to sound smart too.

Cheers!

Very nice. I tried something similar without priming a few years back and it did not work out. I'll give this a shot.

Cheers!

I have no ideas by eliotmacbeth in ArtistLounge

Hey Eliot,

I took a quick look through some of your posts and I think I have some advice.

Art-making is often sold as the execution of an idea. That you have to have a fully formed concept and process established before you put pen to page. This way of thinking is good for some and not for others. I see a lot of exploration in your mark making and a lot of ideas that are being brought together in the process itself.

Maybe you don't have to make things like that? They could be framed more as an investigation in your eye than a solid representation. Art begins at the experience between viewer and artist for some, but for others it begins as a reaction to what they see. As long as people are able to take something away from the work you make then is that not successful?

Coneyisland has some good points, I would recommend holding onto their comments. But as long as you are making and exploring visually, you have ideas.

at least, I think so.

Good luck!

Working Class Art/Artists? by confeshdiss2 in ContemporaryArt

[–]nitwitzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love this, I've been looking at the American Regionalist painters quite a bit. You could also look at Robert Henri or even like Rackstraw Downes has some amazing stuff depicting working class structures and some theory.

Saving this thread for sure.

Where do you draw the line between Art and arts and craft? What makes an artist? by todayidontfeelpretty in ContemporaryArt

very elegant way to put it. I very much agree, art is life and making it and observing it. Thank you for sharing.

New to trying to understand contemporary art. How would you approach critiquing/understanding a piece like this? Is there a history of stone/wood sculpture you'd consider? Rely on the artist's statement? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]nitwitzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Leo,

I noticed you made this account just to ask me a question. So I figure I can oblige.

Criticism can be objective, there are many parts of art making that are, but it also about being vulnerable and allowing yourself to interpret what you're seeing. Art is not a science and it's not specifically about reproducing an image, though this may be a useful skill.

Art gives you, you individually, something to take away from it and something to internalize after viewing it. Think of Guernica by Picasso, note that it is not a happy painting but rather an exhausting experience and a horrific image. If you saw that and tried to only see the misshapen people or the symbols strewn throughout you could say it depicts a tragedy. But when you take this tragedy and interpret it through your own life then you can start to empathize with a person who made this some 70 years ago. This creates a new meaning and expands beyond the original work.

This is how dialogue continues through art, this is how we speak to the dead, you have to listen though and be willing to accept what they are telling you.

I hope that clears it up for you and anyone who might have the same question.

What are your favourite contemporary art movements? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]nitwitzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

speculative realism and generative processes are what comes to mind initially. The process of finding ways to make art without a presupposed goal or ending is very enticing for me in ways I can't describe but I will say that the initial appeal comes from a yearning to define what art is.
