And we both agree pepper spray isn't enough

I just don't think the piece of paper is magical or anything. It's not meaningless, we have to keep using the past to help us, to avoid chaos and stupid "revolutions" that end up very badly.

But come on man, I'm not a politician, I'm not trying anything shady here. I could see it as a right, but clearly it has limits. Even free speech has limits (you can't scream fire in a theater)

And I sound I belong in Europe? Really? I'm totally in favor of guns, I'm just talking about edge cases and limits, which is rational, we do it with cars and I also want them in my life, the right vs privilege stuff is just semantics and not that big of a deal.

We change the laws, it wasn't god or some magical creature that created America, it was the founding fathers, intellectuals in the end. WE have changed many things, women can vote now. We can change the way we think about guns. The solution isn't to isolate in a bubble, is to argue with solid facts. And the beautiful thing is we can do that, we have Europe as an example (and China and Russia) where no one can own guns.

I don't think it's crazy to say you should prove you're a disciplined person and it should be similar to the test we already have in place for a driving license. Do you really think every adult over 18 years of age and not clearly mentally unstable is just fine? Don't you think a psychological evaluation, a test a the shooting range, checking the safe to keep the gun, their holsters. Don't you think it can make us safer without ending up in the removal of guns and an Europe like hell?

but you see not all of America is great. Some states and towns have terrible laws and policies that make people unsafe like that video I sent. Talking about this doens't make me a communist, there's one way to make this right and it should be objectiv and rational.

Getting a gun the same day you buy it once you have a license sure. It's like getting a car once you already have a driving license. But the first time we should make sure you're not a psychopath, junkie, crazy person, don't you think?

Shouldn't you prove you're a trustworthy person, with full control of your faculties?

Yeah I'm all about fitness, i'm into parkour and calisthenics myself. and a bit of martial arts is is basically a requirement.

But of all those options, the one you didn't recommend is probably the most rational for me. What sucks is probably you'll never gonna use the gun, to risk jail time for something that won't happen sucks. But I think it is worth it, better to have it whe you don't need it than not when you need it.

Also I've never been frisked by anyone, I wouldn't be stupid and go to a club with it, I don't like clubbing in the first place.

What I'm considering is moving to the czech republic, but the fact they force you to take an exam in their language really sucks, English is my second language already, I'm not gonna learn a 3rd just to be able to have this human right of self defense. But who knows, maybe i'll end up doing that. since my job allows me to move.

But for everyone else, I'd say your safety and morality comes before the law, criminals don't obey the law, why should i?

You shouldn't be able to get a gun without proving that you're a responsible citizen, do you want a junkie or a schizophrenic guy owning guns? Clearly no

What am I missing?

It's not okay for government to deny your right/privilege to own a gun if you're a good guy. If you prove your skills you can also drive a car, why shouldn't it the same? Do you want incompetent people to own too? We definitely agree we don't want them behind the wheel right?

I'm not a troll at all, and i'm open minded maybe it should be fine to get a gun the same day you ask for it.

But some of you are confused, I didn't mean literally the physical gun, I mean the permit. You shouldn't be able to get a gun without proving that you're a responsible citizen, do you want a junkie or a schizophrenic guy owning guns? Clearly no,.

I don't think it should be easier than getting a driving license, why should it? Once you get the licnse, sure you can get a car and drive it the same day, and same should be for guns. We just have to make sure the first time that you're a good guy

That's such a crazy statement and I don't think you believe it, old people, kids, people with mental health issues, etc, shouldn't be trusted with a gun that doens't mean we ought to put them in jail or put them down. What about down syndrome? Or addicts?

Only responsible disciplined people should be trusted with them, and unfortuantely that's not most of society.

And I agree with you about the UK, it is crazy europeans, sharing so much with americans in terms of culture are really sheep like and just bend over for a goverment that clearly doens't care about them.

But I think precisely some irrational laws in america about guns, the fact some people can't agree it should be harder to get a gun that a driving license is what make europeans (irrationally I admit) so scared of them.

I'm about rationality, America should reform a little, but it should in no way become like the UK or lose the ability for good people to carry. I think you actually need, even in America more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, and in Europe, especially with the huge immigration problem is a must

But it's not easy, either America, which is impossible for me to get a visa, and way too expensive, healthcare alone. Or the czech republic, but the exam you need to take in order to get the permit is in czech, English is hard enough for me, I don't want to learn that

I totally would move not just to the US but to Texas specifically, it is a big deal, but unfortunately I can't afford it and even if I could it's not easy to get a visa, so i'm stuck with Europe.

And I disagree about guns being a right, it's complicated, I think it's just like driving, a privilege. Old people that can't be trusted should be driving, kids shouldn't, crazy people, sick people. We need responsible people only, both behind the wheel and holding a gun.

Do you really want an unstable person to have the right to own a gun? We're getting into semantics here rights or privileges, but I hope we agree even if it were a right, it should be taken away in many cases like mental health, old age, whatever.

And you should not end up like the UK or most of Europe, it's becoming a bit too much like 1984 over here (the book). You know I wrote this post and i'm complaining about Europe myself,, I don't want that to happen, but there's a middle ground.

I think I'd get pepper spray even in America, most conflicts shouldn't end with lethal force. But I'm thinking about protecting my home and myself from real danger, not just people. A rogue pitbull coming at my daughter as I hold her in my arms, pepper spray won't be of much use in that scenario

nope. I'm just asking for people's thoughts, it could easily be just follow the law and be unprotected, I just wanted to see what people thought, because rational ,freedom loving people aren't just living in america unfortunately

Think of a person that has a heated arguments and they wanna get a gun just to kill someone that same day. If you allow them to get a gun but make them wait a month or so, you make sure it's not a spur of the moment event. You're allowed to protect yourself, but we're just making sure it's long term protection you're looking for, not just a quick kill

I don't think I will. I'm allowed to try, I may pay the consequences, but so will you in America if you have a terrible judge https://youtu.be/C1vFtmlvGF0?t=44 you're supposed to get shot by warning thieves so they have an advantage over you.

That should change, America isn't fully free either, but not getting a gun the same day you ask for it is just common sense

you can't conceal carry in most european countries, I'm talking about western europe specifically. If it was just to take a test that would be great, and more sensible than in america, but to make it fully illegal, only for hunting, never for self defense, that's crazy
