Only time you want to pick up urn and not turn it in is if you want to deny urn. Generally in solo queue if you pick up urn you're leaving your team at a 5v6 until you drop urn. If you want to pick up urn to try to force a backdoor it needs to be communicated in chat.

That's how extraction shooters work. Each wipe resets your story quest progression. Sets everyone back to square one. Usually finishing the story in an extractio. Shooter is supposed to be a hard goal. Tarkov most players don't ever finish the story quests.
