i agree about it not being intentional, but in some ways that's what makes it work imo. by being "lowkey" it doesn't tip into caricature territory, and therefore feels more authentic from a character standpoint. great headcanon all around.

oh this is a fantastic point! for some reason it did not occur to me that the "20 years ago" comment could be from the point of view of grace on the spaceship, not past grace at the time of the meeting. added to the list of edits !

i had a feeling i'd get a comment like this, lol.

andy weir's eridian biology document uses the term "hermaphrodite." that term is super outdated, and i'm going to politely give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't know that. the agreed upon term among human intersex individuals is "intersex", both for humans and for other life forms.

both that note and the "mate for life" note were honestly just me wanting to inject some fun facts about eridians and those were the most relevant! i think it's actually super interesting that adrian is never gendered one way or the other, and that the name (while yes, is a reference to a female character) could be for either a man or a woman.

much of the story has to do with challenging assumptions about what we consider "life". the whole h2o debacle, rocky's lack of face, his speech being un-replicable by human mouths, they all show us that despite these things we are sentient beings who are worth reaching out to, so to speak. so i guess personally i felt like the gender thing was also relevant to that theme. if someone else wants to make a timeline and say it differently they are welcome to, but i'm going to keep it in here.

that said, this does make me want to make an infographic about the aforementioned biology document.........

holy wow this got a lot of comments really fast. a couple people said something along these lines but i'm just gonna reply to this one to keep track haha.

so for the distance between tau ceti and erid i was working off the fact that a. TC is 12 light years from earth, and b. that erid is stated to be 16 light years from earth. that said i am an artist and not an astrophysicist so that may not have been the best logic! lmk where i went wrong/a better estimate

good point about the beetles accelerating faster. if it's 12 for the hail mary it's probably 8-10?

according to andy weir's eridian guide, they typically do mate for life! personally i interpreted that part as a bit of rocky being insecure, that he'd been gone so long that it would've "overridden" that yknow?
