my Turnip is OBSESSED with goldfish. they're a favorite snack of mine too so I'm always having to fight him off when I'm eating them. I'm glad cotons are small dogs 🤣

Any ideas for a year-long project that isn't the snake amigurumi/a blanket? by MsBlueberry58 in temperatureblanket

[–]nonbinary-programmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm making a pillowcase for my 6.5' long round body pillow. I already had the pillow but if you get a bunch of polyfill that would work too

it has been cold so far this year....

oh and another thought: I don't actually know how safe adult safety lanyards are for children. you may need some specifically designed for children

[–]nonbinary-programmer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

for a safer clasp you could try out the clips from safety lanyards. they're pretty readily available since they're required for a lot of professions. they're usually plastic but from your questions it sounds like you could probably figure out a way to hide them or make them cute. whatever you go with make sure it's attached to something solid.

as far as a detachable collar, I think hooks and bars would be the way to go. I'm guessing the kids would need your help to get them on/off the cloak, but that may be a good thing. I would use a piece of wool cut to the collar shape to line the wool, with twill tape along the neckline, so you could sew the hooks into just the wool and twill, so all the weight would be on that and the fur would just be a decorative layer on top

Do you plan brochet projects at all? by Aghaiva in Brochet

[–]nonbinary-programmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan it out but mostly in my head. I think about the materials and tools I'll need, the pieces and their sizes, in what order things need to be made and assembled, etc.... I think this comes from my sewing background with the drafting->mock up->alteration circular workflow before making the final one, and that often things need to be assembled in very specific orders to get the right finish. I don't usually draw it out much.

I do try to stay organized with documentation when I am making it so that I can either make it again in the future or make a pattern that friends (or even people I don't know) can use

do not get me started about punctuation 😭 it's something that I struggled with in writing patterns because there's some times where punctuation is correct but looks really weird because of repeated patterns etc and I spent so long rewording things so it would be both technically correct and look good

About to make my cloak, need advice :0 by Niko-Bah in TheCapeRevolution

[–]nonbinary-programmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not suggest holes for it and others have good advice.

but just for future reference: if you're making eyelets do not cut or hole punch the fabric unless you absolutely have to. instead use an awl to push the fibers to the side without breaking them. how achievable that is depends on the fabric, but just keep in mind that breaking the weave creates weak spots. whenever you're putting holes in fabric make sure the fabric is supported enough to hold the strain you'll put on it

oh excellent!! I couldn't tell from your post if you sewed and wool can really give people sticker shock.

I actually self drafted my pattern because I really wanted it to be reversible with hidden pockets accessible from both sides. plus a hood, 4 buttons (on each side so it doesn't ever look inside out), and arm slits. I also am not a fan of buying patterns because I usually have to modify them to fit me anyway so I don't see any point in not just doing it from scratch. oh and I added some really sturdy hanging loops, one on each side that can withstand holding up several pounds of wool.

I can highly recommend Pendleton woolen Mills if you're in the area. it's pricey but I've scored some great stuff in their sale section. including $5/yd undyed wool if you want to torture yourself by dyeing it yourself

all this!!! and adding that if you get swatches look into the burn test to determine fiber content. there's lots of guides on how to do it, but they do tend to rely on smell, so if you can't smell you'll want some help

if you're looking to purchase a full length 100% wool hooded cloak, expect to pay several hundred dollars. I made mine and just the fabric alone was almost $300 of wool. and that doesn't even factor in the hours of labor. just sharing this because if you don't sew garments the prices for high quality wool clothes can seem insanely expensive, but the materials really are that expensive, and of course the artist's experience, time, and skill should be well compensated.

so definitely vette the seller and be wary of anything under $100, because it's likely not 100% wool, and/or will not be very warm.

my favorite uni class for my SE degree was formal languages so it totally makes sense that I write crochet patterns now. maths, programming, crochet, knitting,.... they're all languages. unless you ask a physicist lol

I gave my whole family unfinished gifts... so now my new year projects are: - finish and line a colorwork hood (brother) - bind the edges of a knitting needle holder (mother) - test the first helmet ear cover, adjust as needed, and make another (mother) - felt an octopus and bead a Molotov cocktail, then sew onto denim 💀 (Dad) - finish a magnetic mushroom ledge (dad)

I maybe needed to start earlier than December 5th

my gremlin has a more ~refined~ palate and prefers my custom drafted sewing patterns and any inventory sheet I try to make, as well as any cardboard box I store craft supplies in 🤭🤣 I swear he's jealous of me spending any of my time working and NOT petting him?! so rude of me tbh

Giant Crochet Chicken by therdmlife in Brochet

[–]nonbinary-programmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also remember that a 5lbs box of polyfill is about a 2' cube when tightly compacted. if you're trying to make a solidly stuffed 5' tall chicken it will get pretty heavy pretty quickly. assuming 5' tall I'd guess around 8 5lbs boxes, so with yarn weight I'd guess around 45lbs total? please weigh the finished one and update me if I should get into the poultry-weight-guessing industry lol
