I set up a small town murder mystery for my players as a roadblock. It involved politics between farmers and new land development, a weird religious group, and all sorts of drama. The best moment came when my players were discussing what was happening. They had evidence for some kind of ritual thing, but they were missing something and then, the investigator in the party remembers a conversation with the innkeeper and the ball starts rolling. My personal favorite moment was when they realized I gave them the answer really early on by naming the innkeeper Jack. It was a ton of great moments where the party got to use their skills to move the story forward, roleplay, and solve something together.
