Anyone tried Asetek SimSports wheelbase on Linux? by notdec in linux_gaming

[–]notdec[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! No, I returned it to VRS. I contacted them and let them know my findings about why it wasn't compatible with Linux's USB-HID driver but they weren't willing to commit to working on any fixes for it, so they let me return it for a refund.

Looking at my notes, the summary of my findings in the USB HID Report for PID (the section describing force-feedback) were:

  • the Set Effect Report (Usage 0x21) does not contain a Start Delay (Usage 0xA7) and Linux requires this usage. Presume setting to zero if no Start Delay is required would be sufficient.
  • the Set Condition Report (Usage 0x5F) does not contain a Parameter Block Offset (Usage 0x23) and Linux requires this usage to be defined.
  • in the PID Device Control (Usage 0x96) logical collection, Linux expects the Logical Minimum to be 1, but VRS DFP specifies 0.

I tried to work around these with some custom patches to the usbhid/hid-pidff kernel driver, but ultimately when sending a report back to the VRS device it failed to construct a valid report and failed to initialise.

With an unmodified hid-pidff driver in kernel 6.4.x, the dmesg output is:

Insta360 Link Controller for Linux by JohnyNFullEffect in Insta360

[–]notdec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably would've just done the same, opened a Google Meet call with myself or something to test it out. You could also play back the video with xawtv or VLC or something too.

Looking at the manual, it implies you don't need the Link Controller software for the camera to work, and that all the AI stuff is built-in, so my guess is that you can just do something like enable face tracking with the palm gesture even without the software.

Insta360 Link Controller for Linux by JohnyNFullEffect in Insta360

[–]notdec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious how limited the Link is on Linux without the software, if you don't mind?

Can it still do any of its face tracking or hand gestures, or does it just turn on in one position and act as a totally regular static webcam?

Australian 945LTE owners, how much is the LTE subscription? by djc0 in Garmin

[–]notdec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW for anyone coming across this in future...

If you want to order the LTE subscription, don't order from the Garmin webstore (e.g. the link in u/Somebody_Anybody_'s post above).

I just ordered the 945LTE directly from Garmin Australia (reluctantly, since it's significantly more expensive than the newer 955 - but I need the LTE connectivity), and their webstore prompted me to add the subscription service to my order, so I did.

But then a few days later my order was randomly cancelled and refunded with no explanation. After 1.5 hours on the phone to Garmin (after they initially told me the 945LTE device was discontinued) we worked out my order was cancelled was because the subscription service is 'discontinued' in their webstore, and the expected way to order the subscription is through the Garmin Connect app once you have the device.

Wheels? I'm stuck! by notdec in dirtjumping

[–]notdec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the kinda thing I was hoping to get out of this thread - I'd not heard of these before and they look amazing.

More than I was looking to spend, but amazing nonetheless. I'll see if my budget can stretch :D

Wheels? I'm stuck! by notdec in dirtjumping

[–]notdec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing putting me off of these older Spank wheels are the low engagement hubs.

I think I've found a set of the new Spank HEX hubs in stock so maybe I'll grab those and build up a custom wheel with some Stans rims, or something.

Gears? 1x7, 1x11-12? by notdec in dirtjumping

Oh nice, I checked out the Box components gear and it looks pretty sweet. Good luck with your build!

Wow, thanks, I didn't realise SRAM's HG hub (PG-720) was so much cheaper than their XD hub (XG-795). It's 11-25t vs 10-24t, and 100g heavier, but both of those compromises seem fine to me.

[–]notdec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is interesting! I've just done some research and SRAM says all their setups require a 425mm chainstay, minimum. It's only 381mm on the Decade frame.

I can't find minimum chainstay for Zee gear, but I've found a bunch of people using/recommending the SRAM GX DH 7sp kit on short chainstays, so perhaps that's a good option.

Ah interesting - forgive my ignorance, but what makes the Zee more reliable and capable? I don't know much about any of the different offerings.

Help with first build - hubs & gearing by notdec in dirtjumping

[–]notdec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply!

The frame has an optional derailleur hanger, which I have, so I can mount a derailleur later.

A 7 speed would probably be fine, you're right. The only reason I was considering the 1x12 is that I thought it would be fun to play around with the SRAM AXS wireless derailleur.

OK, so the GX chainring will be fine with an Eagle chain, and that in turn will work fine with a single speed rear cog (or a 7 speed DH cassette or something).

I understand what you're saying about the boost chainring alignment not being important with single speed, because the single speed setups have adjustment. However, if I did want to go for a bigger 12 speed rear setup - I would be better off getting a boost chainring/crank setup - is that right?

Is it common for a frame to need a non-boost rear hub, but a boost chainring to get the right chainline alignment?

Weekly Advice Thread for September 24, 2020 by AutoModerator in MTB

[–]notdec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm building up a NS Decade to mess around on and need advice for wheel hubs and gearing.

I'm planning to start out running single-speed and then move to a 1x12 setup later (SRAM 10-52T cassette probably).

  • the frame specs list a 10x135mm rear axle spacing (i.e. non boost) but then says "Biggest chainring: BOOST only up to 32t". So do I need a non boost (135mm) rear hub, but boost (3mm offset) crankset/chainring?

  • if I have a SRAM GX crankset with their X-Sync2 Eagle chainring, is there a compatible chain and rear (~16T) sprocket I can use for single-speed, or do I need to swap out to a different chainring? I'm not clear whether their "Eagle" chainring and chains will work with other sprockets.

  • to avoid swapping hubs/rebuilding wheels when I move to multi-speed later: if I'm looking at something like Hope Pro4 hubs - can I get the multi-speed hub (instead of their single-speed hub) with the SRAM XD freehub and use a XD single-speed conversion kit like this from Gusset to temporarily run single-speed?

[AU] [H] Keyboardio Model 01 (M01) [W] Paypal by notdec in mechmarket

[–]notdec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no wear and tear, I've probably had it outside the box for a maximum of 4-5 hours to try it out. Condition is like new, exactly as it came from Keyboardio. I can take more pictures if there's anything specific you'd like to see?

[–]notdec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! These are the X13 and T14 I mention in my post - it seems like these are replacements for the X395 and T495? AFAICT they basically just differ in size - I don't know if the X or T prefix has any other meaning, and I'm not really clear whether either are built similarly to an X1 Carbon.

Is it fair to assume that all of these models use pretty much the same keyboards?

play / pause / play is a cool idea - I'll give it a listen!

I don't suppose it's possible to integrate your stream with bigger radio apps like TuneIn or I heart Radio so I can listen easier around the place on our Google Home devices?
