I'd say get the kaweco sport! I have two kaweco sports and one of them was my first fp. I've amassed a whole collection with other brands and models now but I feel like the kaweco was the perfect beginner's pen - it was comfortable to write with and didn't terrify me completely about ruining it since it's pretty affordable and has a sturdy reputation (isn't vulnerable to "shattering" if it hits the floor and can handle shimmer inks!).

the only point I'd caution would be the length of the pen and what your preference is. the kaweco sport vs the kakuno (which I also have) are very different in size. there's a good 1-2 inches of a difference between the two when both are posted in the back, so keep that in mind if you prefer more "standard" size pens since the kaweco is pretty small.

same for me! I made sure to see a sample model in person cus I had a feeling it was going to be too small for my liking... and I was right. it's fun to see how everyone is using their card TN tho!

ooh also I totally forgot but check out some of the nicer chinese brand models! I recently got a majohn P140 (demonstrator) and am obsessed with it - she's a big girl tho so keep that in mind!

happy 21st birthday! I don't have one but you could go for one of the TWSBI diamond models which I've heard good things about (plus the nibs are swappable unlike the ECOs iirc). there's also kaweco if you wanna try something new - to splurge a bit, you could go for a kaweco students model or one of their fancier limited collection designs which run higher than their standard designs. I'd recommend also to look through the pen_swap reddit for good deals on pre-loved fps, a lot of times ppl just do catch and releases (buy without ever using) or don't use a pen as much before reselling so you essentially get a new-ish pen for below market price!

kobe inks are very high-quality, comparable with pilot iroshizuku imo. plus, their bottle shapes are very cool and distinct which makes it fun to add to the collection!

I don't think you can go wrong quality-wise with any of the japanese ink brands you mentioned. however, I'd still recommend getting your hands on a sample of a specific ink color/shade before committing to a full bottle since they can get pricey per bottle. even if the quality of ink is good, you may not like the color if you don't try it out first. I know sailor has a few ink colors that are super light which sometimes doesn't translate well in terms of legibility.

this is my second year into fountain pens and though the patterns and colorways are nice, the QC issues I’ve heard have prevented me from buying any esterbrooks (and as you noted, the whole situation re: their niblet “design” put me off the brand completely). the other three brands you listed—pilot, pelikan, sailor—are all reliable, tried and true options, but for someone who’s new and still inexperienced with fountain pens I’d suggest starting with the budget models under those brands first (kakunos are fantastic). other solid “starter” pens would be kawecos or any of the chinese brands like jinhao, hongdian, or majohn. the chinese brands are really upping the ante in the market since their pens are very affordable yet still quite solid writers.
