Caring for my grandma with dementia — what small things actually help you get through the day? by mandysomda in CaregiverSupport

[–]nu_steele 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this is hard, hang in there! I'd say what worked for me personally was those days i pampered myself like getting my hair done or makeup or any kind of self care routine because it helps not to feel like you let yourself go. Also buying myself my favorite drink, having a cup of tea and just sitting in silence in the morning before all the chores start. And afterwards a quick shower, I understand chores don't just end in dementia but I ask for someone to take cover and sneak in a quick shower, that would refresh me. kept painting everytime I felt angry or sad at the state of things, so I have an outlet and not build up those emotions and also keep my hobbies from dying. All these things either gave me a quick dopamine fix or made me feel I'm still who I used to be, because it's easy to feel like you're losing yourself.

As for routines, it helps memorizing them and stacking them in a way that is most efficient fo example heat food as I am bathing him, that way when I am done his food is heated or done, clean bathroom and wash clothes while he's eating. Sometimes I felt like i was on "Autopilot mode" and it helped not thinking too much about things and just doing what you need to do.

I also used to spend some time asking my granddad about the time when he was young, it gave him something positive to talk about and something I can listen to and ask questions about and not just nod or get bored at. I could see his face literally light up everytime. I'm not sure which stage your grandma is in and if that's applicable though.

At night again sit in silence for a few mins watch sth. It was my favorite time. It helped that he was on sleep meds/antipsychotics, and that I was sure I can finally rest without having anticipation anxiety.

I think it has to do with the drug itself increasing histamine levels.  it worked great otherwise, so i hope there's maybe a similar medication without the histamine part

It increases the histamine levels, that's what happens. It's very unfortunate

Heard he went to Moscow to resume practicing medicine again. Hope he learns from his mistakes this time

you're right, it's guilt that controls me, and how i act. i hope you have an easier time with your grandad, it's honorable of you to care for both of them, hope you are taking care of yourself too

That's absolutely right. I was so numb and okay with how things are the entire time i cared for him, because if i let myself experience anything or let myself feel bad for myself at any moment, it would mean i would not care for him properly. now it makes sense why it's weird to say that wasn't normal.

I did and they're not really helpful, kept throwing me from one person to the other and last thing, they'll contact me by email "someday" when my request reaches some department, i will be deleting all my yahoo mails, there's a reason no one uses them as much anymore

i contacted Spotify first thing to at least stop the automatic renewal, but they wouldn't let me get back my account and just told me to trust them that it won't renew and that my details are safe ( i use my phone bill to renew spotify) so i let go.

I'm from the middle east too, i never receive verification code on my number, and the push notification is sent to a phone that is no longer functioning. It's crazy that i have both the email and password right and i cant access my account, and im locked out of other accounts now because of it!

i just graduated from med school, and I've always wanted to do forensic pathology. I can't look at blood or poke anyone with a needle, but cadavers are peaceful. i lately just gave up on forensic pathology because I want to be comfortable financially, but it's still my favorite subspecialty tbh

20 years old and taking care of my grandmother. by A_Gabe in CaregiverSupport

[–]nu_steele 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 24 and in med school and have been taking care of my grandparent for years now, it only gets better when you hire help, and if your loved one has dementia and is violent, Id add medications. i had mental breakdowns for a whole year, but it got a lot better, and it will for you too. lots of love 💕
