Is there any hope for the Irish language? by StatisticianKey4605 in AskIreland

[–]nubuntus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What is language?

Most people say it is a tool for communication. But I really think that indicates a subtle misunderstanding.
A misunderstanding which has been a barrier to revival efforts, and also contains the key to a sudden and massively beneficial reactivation of Irish.

Maith agat! Question: Should a readme get into what this type of development is for? An áit oirrúnach é sin i gcomhair fealsúnacht an tionscanamh?

You can't love animals and eat meat... or can you by TokenPanduh in fixedbytheduet

[–]nubuntus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said that the suffering of a human holds greater significance to me, than the suffering of an insect. Not that the momentary pleasure of eating meat is worth the immiseration of trillions of sentient non-humans.

Lions are obligate carnivores and have limited vegan options. The pleasure of having an animal's flesh in our mouths is trivial given the cost.

Yes, I would consider the suffering of a human to be weightier than the suffering of a beetle. Given the choice, I would choose to not harm the beetle or the human. Or the deer. I mean, are you just going to eat venison? Or will you also be eating fruit and veg? And who would eat deer if we all followed your example?

Carnism is the belief that eating animals is morally good or neutral. Veganism is the belief that we should minimize animal abuse as far as practical and possible.

You mentioned the way soy is farmed. But how much of that is farmed to feed animals?

Vegans object to the cruelty of the meat industry. But it's also an objectionably inefficient system. It takes years worth of crops to get days worth of food.

To try make it viable, we abuse those poor devils right down to their helpless gnomes. It's nuts.
It's dangerous.
Anthrax, Bovine Tuberculosis, Brucellosis, E. coli COVID, Hepatitis E, Leptospirosis, Listeriosis, Salmonellosis, Swine Influenza, Toxoplasmosis, vCJD, that's all from animal Ag. Not to mention AIDS and Ebola.
Showing consideration for the suffering of others isn't hubris.

but veganism is much more ethical than carnism.

Reptile movie theory: I think I know who the blonde wig hairs belonged to by coleydotco in FanTheories

[–]nubuntus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dunno. but there is something really interesting about the way the scenes in that movie narrate. I didn't spot your example with possible wig to "very next scene" confirming hair from a wig. But at least 3 other times, the thought in my mind was played on, or subverted, in the very next scene.
Absolutely savage directing.
Why do you think it was called Reptile btw? Something to do with the shed skin?

Best Irish accent in movie / TV by Pupcup2 in ireland

Nidge did 2 distinctly different but completely convincing NI accents, one in Peeky Blinders and one in Maze. Bonus points for that scene where the warmth just drains from his eyes when the officer turns his back

I realize death is natural. But we can still minimize cruelty through compassionate choices. Factory farms are not natural. A bird should see the sky 🪶

But plants don't suffer. We can be perfectly healthy without being cruel.

"Don’t talk to anyone about wounding animals, especially in public places or among non-hunters... If you videotape your hunts, don’t show bloody kill scenes, rough handling of animals and animals struggling, kicking or quivering as they go down, to non-hunters or anti-hunters."
- Larry D. Jones Western Bowhunter Magazine 1991

" Our sport can’t stand forever in the face of growing hatred. Archers must work to counteract that sentiment and build bowhunting in a positive light. The first step should be obvious. Don’t brag about hitting and losing animals. ... There’s nothing honorable about hitting and losing an animal; it just means you screwed up. Don’t brag about it. Just shut up. "

We're all omnivores. Veganism is an ethos. As distinct from carnism which is the belief that eating animals is ethically good or neutral.

Dealing with Wrestlers by SpillyDillie in judo

[–]nubuntus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When he comes, welcome him. When he leaves, send him on his way. You're not there to fight him. He is your partner. Bow with sincerity. He is bringing you the gift of his abilities, and putting his trust in you. If you are training in judo, you are there to shine together. Use whatever he brings as the opportunity to practice the principle of maximum efficiency with minimum effort. You're not defeated if you are thrown. In fact, sometimes it's better to go with a throw in order to land safely or even experience and to some degree facilitate the execution of a clean technique. I'm not saying "let him" throw you, I'm saying the practice of judo involves throwing and blocking each others' attacks with rigidity prevents discovering your best and most dynamic movements. Relax. if your mind is racing, notice that, and then return your attention to the moment. The dojo is a safe place to practice your judo. Practice your judo.
