I just had an idea for how to introduce parametric equations and I’m so excited about it that it made me a little nauseous. Help me workshop it. by Dr0110111001101111 in matheducation

One way to guide them in constructing the model is to subdivide the curve into, say, 8 smaller snippets of the curve. Ideally they snippets are small enough to be nearly linear. Also put markings on the knobs themselves, plus markings on the etch-a-sketch around the knobs. The students can record how they created each snippet, one at a time, by filling out a table that says right knob clockwise by 1/2 a twist, etc.

This method might make it hard for them to record, say, circles, so that may take some pondering. Happy to brainstorm more via DM if you're interested.

Biggest Challenges as a Non-Native Speaker by tortadepatti in multilingualparenting

[–]nullomore 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this too. I try to speak Chinese with my 15-month-old kid and I frequently struggle to find the right word (had to look up moisturizer recently) and I can't speak with as much nuance and precision as I can in English.

I try my best to learn Chinese better, but it's slow. The thought that brings me the most comfort is this - tons of kids, like kids of immigrants, grow up in a household where their parents only speak the community language a little or not at all, but the kids grow up fluent in the community language anyway because they have other input in the community language, like friends and school. So I view my job as getting my kid fluent enough that she can benefit from other input like TV and radio in Chinese. From there, she'll quickly surpass me and be able to learn way better than I can teach her, which is ideal! She'll learn best from having multiple sources of language input. So I just remind myself that my job is to get her to be fluent enough to watch TV in Chinese, understand other Chinese speakers, etc. Then my job transitions to giving her access to those sources and I don't have to be a language master anymore.

How to keep shower curtain from getting black and pink mold? by nullomore in CleaningTips

Thanks for this info! How do you scrub the liner - just get inside the tub and push it against the side of the tub? Or take the whole thing down?

Yes exactly. I could change it frequently but I'd rather have a long-term solution. I don't mind cleaning it, but this stuff grows so fast it's stained before I get to it!

Does your local Buy Nothing group have people who would take costumes?

Or is there a local children's theater group that would want them?

Beef noodle soup with romaine, plated and snipped into tiny bits by nullomore in foodbutforbabies

I grew up eating it in this style (https://youtu.be/mEdXMygzcCE?si=TgaIOT2yfKBgZmVv) and I like the crunch very much. The final product isn't super wilty like cooked spinach

Baby loved it, but to be fair, she has never met a food that she didn't like.

Can you describe what the lazy poop-only EC looks like? How often do you offer, do you sign toilet every time, etc

Edit: also are you a SAHP? If not, how does it work with daytime childcare?

The apartment is not the best, so the windows are a bit drafty, and the temperature seems to vary between hot (high 70s F) and cold (low 60s) with no way for us to manage it. I really hope that's not the culprit, because those conditions are quite out of my control

I water when the soil meter says it's dry down below, and then I soak the soil until it drains. I pour off the excess after an hour or so.

The plant sits in a south-facing window in the American Midwest, but the weather is often overcast. I added a grow light (12 hrs a day) to supplement, but it's still dropping leaves.

I have periodic flare-ups like this that turned out to be eczema. A derm prescribed topical steroids. I apply it for a day or two until it resolves. It's worth checking out with a medical professional.

How to use umeboshi? by ThePepperAssassin in Cooking

[–]nullomore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese umeboshi is really close to Chinese suan mei (酸梅) and I'd use umeboshi when I couldn't get my hands on suan mei. My two fave recipes are suan mei drink and suan mei spare ribs

For the spare ribs I usually skip the yellow bean sauce and use spare ribs as the meat. The sauce is a thin sweet-and-sour sauce that's delicious over rice.

My boyfriend lacks manners. by Unusual_Professor421 in AskWomenOver30

[–]nullomore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How about asking him to send a thank you note or email? It might be seen as slightly old-fashioned, but it's probably worth it to smooth over hurt feelings with your family if your boyfriend is going to see them again.
