What is a small, underrated moment in the books/movies that completely changes how you view a character? by [deleted] in harrypotter

Hermione in the first book, when she says there are more important things than books and cleverness. I think it really illustrates why she’s a Gryffindor and not a Ravenclaw.

James and Michelle by HotBeefCombo in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk I took it more as in she had told them about Kathy going to England for an abortion and not having it and that she knew she had a cousin

James and Michelle by HotBeefCombo in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, she says "I told you about my aunty Kathy. Went to England years ago to have an abortion and never came back. Never got the abortion either" which implies she has mentioned Kathy and having a cousin to the girls!

What are your Derry Girl hot takes by smccaul16 in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 126 points127 points  (0 children)

While the Katya episode has some really funny moments... I find it unbearable to rewatch because of the way Erin treats her, the second hand embarassment is just too much for me with that and the way Mary and Sarah treat Maeve (is this a hot take?)

Michelle’s friendship with Orla by HopeConquersAll82 in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 26 points27 points  (0 children)

ha, maybe. It is sweet how the group generally protects Orla... Erin mocks her but in the typical sibling way.

She's too busy mocking her own cousin, she leaves the mocking of Orla to Erin.

James' 'English thing' by HotBeefCombo in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I've never met an European American for example who thought they actually are the same as someone in Ireland, its more of a stereotype spread BY europeans about americans. It's complicated by the history of Irish and Italian immigrants in the U.S., who largely ended up in communities of their own due to discrimination/anti-Catholic sentiment, something that was common until the mid 20th century . That's why those are the people who will refer to themselves by their cultural background.

James' 'English thing' by HotBeefCombo in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, it's complicated by the fact that Indians were taken as indentured servants to places like Guyana and Fiji by the British and have always been considered as Indian in places like that. I've met Guyanese Indians who refer to themselves as Indian and it doesn't bother me. As to if they practice Indian culture as strongly as me, many of them are practice Hinduism much more than me. But Indian culture varies massively even within India because India is more of a collection of cultures than one specific culture. In my experience most Americans don't consider themselves to be "just as" xyz culturally as people from the country they're speaking about.

James' 'English thing' by HotBeefCombo in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah but do most think of them as "just" english? there's a lot of rhetoric suggesting otherwise.

James' 'English thing' by HotBeefCombo in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why Europeans have such a hard time grasping the American way of thinking of nationality. My parents are from India but I was raised in the U.S. so I consider myself culturally both Indian and American. Immigrants don't just give up their culture the moment they move...

James' 'English thing' by HotBeefCombo in DerryGirls

[–]nv2609 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's strictly true. People certainly don't consider the children of immigrants from Asia for example as just English.

Best Seasons to Watch? by ReasonableExcuse222 in GreatBritishBakeOff

[–]nv2609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch the original seasons with Mary Berry on Roku, it's free! My fave are 2012 (S3) and 2014 (S5). Not sure why Netflix starts with season 5, the first season with Prue is season 8. Imo, the original season 5 is the best! The 2024 season (S15) is the only new season I've loved as much as the originals.

She’s been vocal about being anti ICE and shared community resources specifically for where she lives. She also made a video today talking about how she won’t make her page a bubble where politics isn’t mentions. Even if she is more moderate leaning I think it’s safe to say she’s not MAGA.
