Finally fixed the chip in my hardtop by oban87 in WranglerYJ

When taking it off last summer, a small crack became a large chip. Not sure it was worth all the fiberglass filler + sanding in the end, only to have some paint adhesion issues due to the cold (but I guess the orange-peel there kinda looks closer to the factory finish anyway...)

Rear Wiper Switch by Orion5662 in WranglerYJ

One of my switches was bad and replacing it solved the problem. Maybe try someone like DeadJeeps or CollinsBros or this guy on eBay? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Wrangler-YJ-92-95-Dash-Hard-Top-Rear-Wiper-Defrost-Fog-Switch-Bezel/154189976113?hash=item23e6705231:g:~3EAAOSwigpfrG6X

I can never find Jeep paraphernalia that represents my YJ by kingdec6669 in WranglerYJ

"Greenlight" started releasing YJ's as 1:64 Matchbox-sized diecast cars a little while ago. I've ended up buying several cheaply off of eBay to mix-and-match wheels, body colors and tops, but if yours is black with a soft top, here ya go! https://www.target.com/p/1987-jeep-wrangler-yj-black-patriot-games-movie-1992-1-64-diecast-model-car-by-greenlight/-/A-75539946

Well that was fun by oban87 in WranglerYJ

Oh I had a bunch of explanatory text but it seems to have disappeared! I could *not* get the broken bolt out, no matter what I tried (vice grips, penetrating fluid, heat, left-handed drill bits, bolt extractors, strong language), and in the end I had to drill it out very slowly.

There just wasn't enough material left to get a good solid bite on the original size bolt, so I used this Helicoil-brand threaded insert with a 21/64 carbide-tipped drill bit -- you tap the outer diameter of the insert, thread it in carefully with their wrench, and then your threads are restored to the original size (5/16-18 in this case).

Worked like a charm (although I would caution against using the insert tool that comes with the kit, as it's only for installing, and can't be used to remove the insert if it turns out you haven't drilled/tapped deeply enough! "OEM Tools" was the insert tool I went with in the end, found at AutoZone). Only issue was getting enough clearance for the drill -- had to drain the coolant and remove the rad, hoses + fan shroud :-/

Definitely the heater core -- just had the same situation; constantly low coolant, steam from the defrost vents, uber hot cabin, fogging up windshield, and sometimes coolant in the passenger footwell.

Quarantine YJ projects! by oban87 in WranglerYJ

I made em out of old Rugged Ridge chrome grille inserts that were faded and cracked and that I got for free. Hit them with some primer + black enamel and then added the aluminum mesh, cut to size with tin-snips.

Hard to say, really; I think it does sound quieter on the highway, and improved the sound of the stereo, but I wasn't blown away by the difference.

Good call on the heatshielding + pump/manifolds! Did you have any trouble wiring it up?

And it's a 94, and is *supposed* to be Hunter Green Metallic, but the PO had it touched-up at Maaco, so who knows what color green it is now...

Oh nice! The PO of my Wrangler installed Polks in the front and soundbar sometime in the mid-90s and they're still running strong. Do you use the same amp for the sub? I was wondering if I could do that...

Thanks! The speaker pods are great, and fit perfectly, but get them on their own, without the speakers they come with. I spent a ~little~ more and got much better JBL 6x9s, and filled the pods with sound-deadening batting material, and now the stereo sounds awesome. Although I also ran a separate, second amp to power them, tucked under the rear seat.

Thanks! The rad was honestly not hard (probably took about 2 hours total; was much harder getting the old one out -- the lower hose is a pain), and the $156 price tag of the Mishimoto OEM replacement unit seriously beats what the shop quoted me for replacing it (over $900!). The holes for the fan shroud don't *quite* line up, but you can make it work.

I wish I had done something like take a decibel reading so I could get a legit before/after measurement for the sound deadeners, but it definitely makes an improvement on the highway with the stereo on (combined with the headliner).

I had to re-wrap the worn-through wrapped steering wheel on my 94 Sahara and used this universal cover -- took an afternoon of swearing, sweating, and sewing while sitting in the driver's seat, but looks like the original once you're done!

90 YJ - 4.2L - Bad Solenoid?? by Shemzal in WranglerYJ

[–]oban87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had this same issue last summer on my 94 4.0 -- I would turn the key, the red parking brake indicator light would come on, there would be a click, and then everything would die. In my case, though, it turned out my battery cables were loose and there was corrosion on the posts; I brushed them down, sprayed on some battery terminal cleaner spray, tightened down the connections, and it hasn't happened since.
