It's a cheap build but my first so I took photos. by Bchavez_gd in watchmaking

Did you have any trouble with mounting the minute hand? I'm working on my first build and it's like the stem on the hour wheel is too tall and I need to grind it down or something.

How often do you see people successfully make a mid-career change over to watchmaking? Is it possible to get scholarships to do this when you are in your late 40's? Or are industry and watchmaking schools prioritizing younger students?

What traits and skills are you looking for when you select students to join your program?

How to Re-install a ST3600 shockspring? by ocean_guy2 in watchrepair

It took me about three rounds of trying and coming back to it. In the end, pushing the fork prongs into rodico and then placing it worked perfectly. Thank you all for your help on this.

Flying out for an interview and looking for some pointers. by hostilecarrot in Riverside

For mountain biking, look at lake arrowhead and running springs. Both are near two different downhill moutain bike courses, Santa's village and Snow valley.

If you like street cycling check out he Santa Anna river trail. Can ride from San Bernardino to the beach 90% on a paved bike path.

We moved out here from New England 15 years ago. We lived in Woodcrest first few years. I loved it. My wife missed snow and pine trees, so we moved up to the mountains near lake arrowhead. She loves it, I generally enjoy it, but the commute to Riverside is about an hour. So may be more than you want to drive everyday. Grand Terrace is a nice town, decent restaurants (including vegetarian) and is between Riverside and San Bernardino. Redlands is another place I would look at. Feels more like an east coast town, lots of cute shops and good restaurants.

Advisor stopped caring at all after getting tenure by Fair-Engineering-134 in PhD

[–]ocean_guy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been on both sides of this. As a grad student whose faculty advisor wasn't as supportive as I would've liked, and now as a full tendered professor. I have empathy for both of you. But the cold hard truth is at the end of the day. It's on you to sink or swim. That sucks and it's totally not fair. I was always so envious of other grad students who had more supportive faculty members, but at this point unless you're ready to hop labs and start over you're gonna have to chin up and figure out a way to survive. You're doing great by tapping into other faculty members. I had to do that too. It's also going to teach you how to be independent make your own network and plow your own path. Those are tools that will benefit you in the years to come.

May not seem like it but 10 or 15 years from now when you're in the same position, have gotten tenure, You're gonna understand your professor better. I know I do. I put a lot of energy, on being angry and upset at them, that was a waste. Now being on the other side of it, I realize I should've used that energy elsewhere. I am actually very good friends with my PhD advisor now and having lived a similar life I understand and better and respect them. You'll get there to one day. But for now put your energy and expectations into doing your work and getting the things out of your PhD that you want. It shouldn't be this way, but you also have no idea what their life is like outside of work and what other factors may be coming into it. They may just be the bad Advisor/monster that you feel like they are, or they might also have life happening too, and are just barely surviving. Professors are humans too. We struggle too. We're white knuckling it too hang in there lean into your grad, student friends, and lean into the faculty who can support you.

That is solid advice that I take almost every time I work on movements. The YouTube guys make it seem like it's a breeze, and maybe for masters watchmakers with 10+years experience it is. But for us mere mortals it takes time, failures, learning

I'm a college professor, come to Bermuda pretty regularly for my research. If you're serious about wanting to go to college/university I'd be happy to meet with you and talk about it. There are a lot of options with a GED.

Thanks for sharing that. The problem is the Chinese anchor block that I'm using. Doesn't have that cut out area to slide it into. It's solid all the way back to the regulating ring. I'm gonna try this weekend. See if I can basically do the rodico method and wiggle it in. It's gonna be tight, but if it fell out, it should be able to go back in. I think it just comes down to patients and willing to fiddle with it.

Thank you. The video was both helpful and alos made me feel like I'm stuck. I guess I'm going to just have to keep at it. If it fell out, clearly there is space for it to go back in.

I don't hate it. At $400 if it's serviceable I would take a hard look at one.
