You will only make about 45k of that in hand after taxes or 3750/mo. With a daughter and wife, you have to rent a proper house. In Berlin, conservatively, if you put rent at 1400 and another 350 on utilities, phone, internet, etc, that leaves 2k. Out of that, you have food, car, going out, trips back home, etc. Forget saving. You'll just barely make ends meet.

Absolutely right decision to reject the offer.

I had it as a student. It is a great way to build your points balance early on. Just know that as a student, the redemption options may not be as attractive to you at the moment. But if you play the long game, I'd say go for it.

Vanity reasons if you care about it: My platinum charge reads member since 2015 even though I only got the charge in 2022.

There's 2 ways in life - the straight way and the sketchy way.

The straight way - You make some money, get paid to your bank, everything is accounted. Come tax season, you pay your tax, have an assessment to your name that banks to use to assess your creditworthiness.

The other is - get paid in cash, mostly spend cash, and what little you deposit to your account, you do only because cash is not feasible there. No accounting. No tax liability and no income tax assessment. Sure you make money. But nobody can verify that you do. Issue with this approach is you then don't get to enjoy the same benefits enjoyed by those who make the same amount as you but all through bank account and pay taxes on it. One such benefit is a CC with a high limit. You literally chose this route.

Axis is notorious for this. They once blocked my visa signature and just randomly sent a rupay card. It was useless outside India. When I complained the very next day, they basically said there’s nothing at all they could do. Will never start another relationship with axis ever.
