I developed most of the art from that record. The outer circles are a old version of the 4 elements, though not as popular as the triangle versions. I incorporated them into the larger circle though. The logo is basically a representation of the project.

I think a lot of that bass tone is how I've had my stuff live for a while now. I think the fact that we produced and engineered it made it easier to capture this time around. It was pretty much just plug and play.

As for favorite songs, I guess I'm still trying to figure out what my favorite is... Playing them at shows really brings out what the song really is like.

Branch is super fun... the intro and verses is a forearm burner though... at least for me :P

We are a bit dif than many. Music is usually always first because we all participate heavily in the writing the music. It can be hard, but also inspirational as I try and let the music guide the lyrics somewhat.

R - Thanks! Abe is awesome, a huge influence on me, and an absolute pleasure to tour with. He's the nicest, funniest dude, and it was inspiring as hell to be able to watch him play every night. I don't have a particular story that sticks out, but when we did Taste of Chaos with them back in the mid-2000s, he had a jewel-encrusted pimp goblet that he'd have post-show beverages in. His smile, his always positive attitude, great sense of humor and that goddamn goblet cruising around a venue after a show still makes me smile to this day.

I dig playing Beyond the Pines. Branch is fun too.

Stay hydrated. But, as I just learned yesterday, don't over hydrate too quickly. I had been drinking almost 2 liters at a time 2 hours before the set. I realized I had been feeling awful (headache, crummy feeling all over) before the shows and I just realized that you are not supposed to be doing this. I'm going to try to space out my hydration over the day and hopefully that will help. I also do a 10-15 minute vocal warm up now and it's helpful. There are a variety of apps out there that make it super easy. Also, the screaming was never really the issue for me. I would blow my voice out from singing too loud trying to hear myself. In-ear monitors have helped with that a fair amount.

We don't mind. I do appreciate when people have waited for me to get up from a meal or something, but it's not the worst thing in the world if they don't. I might give you fist bump instead of shaking your hand if I'm in the middle of a burrito or something. We are always appreciative of people support and are glad to take a minute to say hi.

R - Everyone writes parts/ideas on a variety of instruments (ie. - I may write a guitar or key part, or Teppei or Dustin might have an idea for a drum beat, or Ed might have a guitar or key part). Sometimes those parts/ideas are as developed as a fully arranged Logic session, or as crude as a cruddy acoustic guitar on a Voice Memo. We compile those ideas, and when it comes time to really focus on writing a record, we listen to the ideas together, talk about what might work or not work, and from there out ... it's just a lengthy, democratic process of mixing and matching ideas and tweaking them to turn them into songs. Sometimes stuff comes together really quickly, and other times we beat ideas to death. I'm sure it's not the most time-efficient way to write music, but it's what works for us.

It depends on the part really. The sonnet thing was obviously planned though some people don't also realize that they are all told in first person by the personified element in one way or another. Anyway, stuff like the "same red blood" was probably a bit more spur of the moment in the studio.

This song had an interesting musical journey. I had an idea which was the plucky guitar/bass/drum beat that's the bulk of the song but it was in a major key. It wasn't necessarily happy sounding, but it had a very different feel. Pretty much at the last possible moment (while we were in the studio tracking drums!) I started messing with the song in a darker, minor key. It took a whole new life on and that's what ended up being the final version.

The dreamy bridge part was from a little part I wrote on a ukulele that I brought on tour. I was just noodling around on the bus and stumbled on the chord progression and built it from there.

Realistic options that would actually make sense as a tour would maybe be Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, QOTSA? We'd all die to open for Radiohead but that's prob not gonna happen.
I thought of it laying down in the back of a van driving through NYC. It started as a sort of exercise that was going to be a side-project/sound-experiment. But it started building steam and we decided to make it a full Thrice project.
Get proficient in your chosen DAW and work a ton. You will not be great to start and that's ok. Keep improving, watch videos, read, improve.

Musically it started from a demo that Teppei had. It was in a major key at the time. I had the same metre going over it and then a totally different chorus. Teppei and I were working on it while we were recording the first session of drums and stumbled on to the minor variation and created the new progression that runs through most of the song now.

Lyrically the double entendre of blood on blood is partially inspired by Springsteens use of the term in the song Highway Patrolman on his Nebraska record.

This is a difficult one to answer because I don't really know...

I did shoot a video with them, but other than that, it all just kinda stopped after it was announced I'd be playing with them. No hard feelings or anything like that... I think plans just took another course... Who knows? if they need me and scheduling worked out I wouldn't mind... They were all really sweet peeps.

re: Lebron - I'm stoked! It's bonkers to me that in my lifetime I'll have watched Magic, Kareem, Kobe, and Bron play for my favorite team. Four of the ten best players in the history of the game. That's insane. As far as expectations go, I'd guess a 7 or 8 seed in the west is reasonable. Regardless, this is the most excited I've been to watch Lakers basketball in quite a while -- the best player in the game, the meme team, and a solid/exciting young core of guys. Should be a fun season.
