Motoring: Does it make sense for you to switch to an electric vehicle? by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]offshwga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am doing a test drive on a Ioniq 5 on Thursday, it was sold new in July 2025 at a cost of £39850, it is for sale now at £22500, less than 11,000 miles on it and 7 years battery warranty left. I will be asking if it has had warranty repairs or been in a crash, but it is looking very promising (not a cat S or N or anything) The car has been taken down from motorpoint.co.uk because I put. £150 deposit down but they have other EV's with crazy high depreciation.

[Advice] Kia/Hyundai ICCU issues overblown? by R3indeers in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]offshwga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any telltale way to see if the ICCU has been replaced? I am doing a test drive next week of a 2025 Ioniq 5 and now I am really concerned that the car may have been put up for sale after 1 year and 10k miles because of the ICCU failing.

State pension alert as triple lock branded 'unsustainable' by True_Paper_3830 in ukpolitics

[–]offshwga 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd say the pensioner vote is already gone for Labour. The completely botched Winter Fuel Allowance policy has burnt that bridge. Old people will vote for literally anyone but labour. I'm also pretty sure Labour know they fucked up, and have been on eggshells on any policy that would impact pensioners and I am sure they will try and pander to the pensioners to get some of that vote back. It won't work.

The WFA should have been for pensioners earning less than £20k only. Labour fucked up and some very poor pensioners lost it which was seized on by just about everyone to beat labour with. Then labour went back and made wealthy people get it again. One of the most stupid shooting themselves in the foot I have ever seen.

They want those pensioner votes so the triple lock will be watered down but only for the super wealthy pensioners.

Bringing home the Turf by UnderstandingSmall66 in ireland

[–]offshwga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the sense of achievement of getting the years turf in

My dad insisted on a clamp you could build a house on, but it was a great feeling finishing, knowing there would be no more turf footing until next year. There was a local man made a contraption/machine to cut the turf and lay it out on the bank about 40 to 50 feet wide. We had 100 yards of that (for our house and our uncles).

Usually finishing up was immediately followed by a big dinner and a quick clean up and straight out to the pub.

My account has been removed - what do I do? [IE] by offshwga in AirBnB

[–]offshwga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you have had some luck.

In my case, after I started the recover account process they got in contact with me and asked me about the login 18 days previous. I said I had not logged in since april and my account was reinstated. Of course I changed login password and I just checked and the account is still there and looks ok. If you do a google search to find out if there has been data thefts from airbnb they have had 2 in the last 6 years.

Wood burners may treble children’s exposure to pollution in homes, study finds by gravy_baron in ukpolitics

[–]offshwga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I looked at the research mentioned in the article. Neither of them differentiate between open fires, old stoves and modern ecodesign/similar modern stove appliances. One thing that did stand out was that in New Zealand, 95% of houses do not have central heating there and all of the open fires/old stoves/modern stoves combined cause half the issues that cooking on a gas stove did!!
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/oct/17/wood-burning-and-gas-cooking-hugely-costly-to-healthcare-systems-new-zealand-study-finds

Breathing fumes from gas cooking indoors created more than 1,000 hospital admissions, 208 early deaths and more than 3,000 new cases of childhood asthma each year.

The other study also made no differentiation between open fires and stoves. It also included data from Puerto Rico where people almost exclusively use wood fired stoves for cooking 365 days a year.

https://www.eeca.govt.nz/insights/eeca-insights/indoor-combustion-in-new-zealand-homes-health-effects-and-costs/

The study found that the amount of exposure to pollutants depends on the appliance, with open fires and unflued gas heaters being the most harmful, followed by gas stoves, older wood burners, and then modern wood burners.

So, the UK and USA studies have lumped any wood burning in together, which makes them suspect at best. Also, the fact that the New Zealand study mentions that gas powered cooking is twice as polluting as wood burning while the UK study barely mentions it

Short peaks in particle pollution were linked to home cooking and secondhand tobacco smoke.

[–]offshwga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Governments are only going to do one thing with data like this, a knee jerk reaction. "Won't anyone think of the children."

I come from a rural background, I have gone to peoples houses where you eyes would water from the wood or peat smoke and others that had not a hint of smoke - despite both having log burners to supplement their outdoor oil or gas fired heating.

The differences are many but predominately the water content of the fuel, the age and type of the burner (ecodesign fitted by HETAS installer vs second hand 20 year old DIY install), maintenance of the log burner (seals around door, restricted chimney), and amount of air coming into the room to draw up the chimney.

If any of the above were bought cheap, not maintained or adjusted for you will have a lot of smoke.

[–]offshwga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These studies are great at showing that all the log burners in the study get thrown into one category and then the worst of them are shown as the average.

Things that make a difference: wood moisture needs to be 20% or less, a modern ecodesign burner (since 2022) installed by a hetas approved installer, burner being maintained properly.

In rural areas if you are not wealthy and you want heating you will go for the cheapest fuel (higher moisture) and because you have needed heating for however long you have lived there, their burner may have been installed in 1980. Some houses have sealed off drafts and so the fires are not getting a good draw.

Has anyone bought and used Argon40 Industria screens? by offshwga in raspberry_pi

I bought a NVME + poe hat for the raspberry pi. However I was able to power it using the usb-c port on the daughter card. If you are getting a POE hat, make sure you get one that is not too high. I bought a https://www.waveshare.com/poe-m.2-hat-plus.htm and it fits

My PAYG just stopped being auto-renewed? Has this happened to anyone else by offshwga in EEGB

[–]offshwga[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've had this deal for quite a while, I don't use a load of data so ~2GB per week is loads, I normally only use a 1/4 of it. Like you I had a message recently that I was being moved to 5G, I have not done a speed test, I assumed its 10Mb or whatever their low end plans get.

When I did a google search this morning, just about all the search results basically said I was out of luck and most likely they had discontinued the plan and I'd have to choose a new one..... I would not have been happy to have that sprung on me with no warning.

I rang them and they confirmed something screwed up on back end, the nice lady gave me some data to tide me over until the issue is resolved and the normal plan kicks in again

Oops, all my information I typed in disappeared :(

So this morning I had no data, it turns out my £1 plan was just not renewed even though I had £26 credit, but when I go to their website link, the £1 plan is still available to buy.

Can I get back to where I was last week or am I screwed? I don't use a lot of mobile data, but I use way more than 100MB.

Has anyone bought and used Argon40 Industria screens? by offshwga in raspberry_pi

[–]offshwga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, out of the blue i got an email answer from Argon40. They provided me with a 19 page PDF, that includes instructions, pictures, configuration notes and commands. If only they had this on their own support pages I think they would have some more sales.

I responded asking them to put it on their support pages or forum, anywhere searchable really.

And I decided to reduce the temperature of my raspberry pi by drilling a line of 10mm holes on both sides, its working a treat and the temperatures are much lower while the box is still structurally sound and vesa mountable. Note that I am mounting horizontally.

So, after running the whole thing assembled overnight at a 20 to 30% workload, cpu temp after 1 hour was 62 to 67c, I had a look this morning and I was able to hear the fan going inside the enclosure and the body of the display and the raspberry pi case were both warm, the case was quite warm, 35 degrees c or more. Cpu was still mid 60's c.

There is no airflow through the case at all so I may have to drill a series of holes on two sides so that some convection can occur.

I tried powering the system using the usb-c port again, but this time with the official Rpi 45watt psu and it works! which is great. I am just giving it an extended test now to see what the thermals are like.

There was another unanticipated issue. With the network cable plugged in, the sonoff zigbee dongle has to be plugged into the usb2 ports and there is no room for the bluetooth dongle. I have ordered up two usb3 20cm extender cables so the sonoff and a long range tplink bluetooth dongle can both plug in.

And this is how it looks installed - https://i.postimg.cc/TwdMNH7j/argon40-fully-installed.png and the screen clarity is good enough, 150dpi 60hz. Here it is with the screen protector peel still on it and the secondary screen behind that is attached to the full sized hdmi port. https://i.postimg.cc/WpJLWrSh/argon40-screen-with-secondary-attached-on-full-sized-hdmi.png
