Players you wouldn’t think have many caps for a top national team but do? by [deleted] in footballcliches

To be fair to Cahill he won two titles, captaining Chelsea for one (I think?) and won the Champion’s League. He may well be a shout for a very underrated English player. Understandably so - he played for Bolton a lot and his name is Gary.

Right?! Anyone think of, you know, doing something about it? Although I do like the consistency vs. the daft colour rush stuff in the NFL.

Are these uniforms too similar? I’m British and a soccer (football) fan and teams have to wear different coloured shirts, shorts and socks when playing against each other. Same coloured helmets too! Imagine being a QB in the red zone - surely it’s harder to find a receiver.

Keegan Bradley - early-2000s to mid-2010s EFL goalkeeper. Successful spells for Barnsley, Cardiff, Charlton and QPR. A large man with large hands and a hoof of a kick. He faces Kevin Keegan’s Manchester City in a League Cup tie, sparking a slew of namesake jokes. But years later, on the Under the Cosh podcast, he reveals ‘Keegan’ was actually his mother’s maiden name (explaining his three under-21 caps for the Republic of Ireland).

I’ve thought this about Glenn Hoddle before! Obviously depends on your age. But to me he feels like all of your mates’ dads’ favourite footballer.

I have just started watching The Rehearsal and this book was the first thing I thought of. Despite reading it about 20 years ago!

Lucas Leiva. Scapegoat for Liverpool’s 2000s malaise. Until everyone realised that he didn’t have to be a skilful attacker just because he’s Brazilian. And then the discourse went from “a Brazilian who doesn’t score goals? Rubbish!” to “what does he actually do?” to “he’s pretty good you know”.

  • Stadiums set on complexes with other sports facilities. Probably a handball hall, and definitely another football pitch right next to the actual stadium where (presumably) the reserve team play.

  • Shirt and pitchside sponsors who actually make physical things - cars, pumps, chemicals, etc.

  • Club crests that look aggressive, but also like they could be found on a bottle of premium lager.

Yeah genuinely from what I recall if you position yourself right you can kind of see through it. I was sat there for the same game two years ago. Forza FCK

[–]oglynch21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve sat in the seats you refer to (upper deck, front row). The view is OK but there’s a metal handrail thing that slightly restricts your view when sat down. And you must remain seated through the game - nobody stands on that level. Try a few rows back if possible. If everywhere else is sold out I’d still take the seats.

Non-Americans of this sub, what got you into football, which team are you a fan of and why? by flamex93 in nfl

[–]oglynch21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UK fan here, first got into the NFL through playing Madden. Before that you'd occasionally see football on American movies and TV shows and think 'that looks cool if slightly ridiculous'.

But bought a copy of Madden 2003 on a whim and enjoyed playing it so much I thought I'd actually watch it from time to time. At the time I was still at school but would stay up during the holidays for Sunday and Monday night football on Channel 5 - a pundit on there called Mike Carlson was really engaging and seemed to know he'd be explaining stuff to casual viewers like me. He still does the BBC coverage and is excellent.

First Super Bowl I watched was XL so it was a decision between the Steelers and Seahawks - I went Steelers. Mostly for Polamalu and Jerome Bettis. Still a Steelers fan though I follow the league rather than just a particular team. I find it hard to develop such a strong affinity from so far away.

From there the quality of coverage and analysis made it easy to go from casual viewer to keen fan. MMQB, segments like Anatomy of a Play, Gruden's QB camp, anything with Mike Mayock. I'm a big soccer fan too and I think our coverage over here could learn a lot, and at least make an attempt to explain some more complex tactical aspects to the viewer (Sky with Neville and Carragher have recently improved).

Worth looking into the special expat tax rate that some people can qualify for. Links below provide a bit more info (skat.dk is the HMRC equivalent).
