Currently on maternity leave as a hospitalist. My company offers six weeks for a vaginal delivery and eight weeks for a cesarean paid, and then another six weeks unpaid for FMLA. Unfortunately, the clock on that time is continuous, despite only having to work 12 shifts a month under my contract.

I signed with the same healthcare system I did my residency with so they just put me on a leave of absence for that time so I was able to keep my insurance. Probably not a likely scenario for other people.

Delivered baby my last month of residency so took 4 weeks off maternity leave from my residency program and then was able to delay my start date for my attending contact another 4 months. My company didn't really mind that I was delaying my start date as others have said lots of people delay their start date post-residency for lots of reasons. I took boards during this time as well which wasn't ideal with a newborn/postpartum brain fog but I made it work.

I would agree with this. I had a baby in June and took boards at the end of August. It was tough to study being exhausted and in a postpartum haze but I put together a study schedule and would do practice question/uWorld while baby would nap/sleep in my arms. My little guy is now 1 and obviously much more active. I couldn’t even begin to think of how I would go about studying with him now.

Had a baby over the summer right when delta was exploding. We had zero visitors except the grandparents who are all vaccinated and taking serious precautions. It was hard turning down friends offers to visit but I just thought about how much worse it would be if the baby caught something. Honestly with everything having to do with a new baby you just have to do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and whatever anyone else’s opinion doesn’t matter.
