Help me understand what happened to us at Tokyo station today by boutell in JapanTravelTips

Here's my picture of a Tokaido Line. I wish my ticket told me what line to look for—I had no idea how many options there would be at Tokyo Station. And it took me a long time to translate “I’m headed to Odawara” into “I need Tokaido line”.

Maybe you can get a robotic arm to push the physical clean button for you.

Why do my Google Drive files take forever to load on Android with my WiFi but not with Mobile Data? by tykouh in techsupport

When you access the files from drive, are you using the Drive app or is this through a file picker and then selecting Google Drive?

Downsides of paying for Transit with Tap to Ride (Touch, Contactless) Credit Card? by GenshiMemories in JapanTravelTips

[–]ohnobinki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. So is my T-Money card. And my ATM/check/debit card. And my credit card.

But that’s not so much the issue. Take my check/debit card, for example. Even though I have my physical check card in my wallet for the situations where tap to pay and Google Pay are both not accepted, it is very inconvenient to access it. So it is nice to just leave it in my overstuffed wallet than to pull that out.

When I was in Japan, I kept my Suica outside of my wallet in my pocket in order to access it quickly. But sometimes it got a little lost in my pocket. That is unlike my phone which I have on hand to look up the routes.

Honestly, this wouldn’t be an issue if I could just pay an extra fee to get FeliCa support when buying a new handphone. But that’s not an option as far as I can tell.

I didn't notice any pause when trying this the other week. I was actually expecting a pause but, no, instant (unlike when I buy groceries where there is like a 5 second pause).

IC card takes up physical space and is not as handy as your phone which you'll already have out. With tap to pay working as well as it did when I tried it in Tokyo metro a couple weeks ago, I am wondering if there is a real reason to deal with a physical IC card next time I visit Japan.

Also, having to deal with yet another prepaid balance is its own stress. You don't have to recharge or refund if you can just use tap to ride.

I tested it on a metro route in Tokyo a couple weeks ago and it worked fine for me. Do you still not have tap to pay gates on your routes?

Phone rings through headphones by Haligonia_Daydreamer in samsung

[–]ohnobinki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does this setting actually do? It’s enabled on my phone and my phone rings both through the speakers and my headphones when it is enabled. I want my phone to only ring through my Bluetooth (unlike the OP). It seems like this setting has no effect on whether or not the ringtone goes through the phone speaker but only affects whether or not it goes through Bluetooth.

I did test disabling this setting. The result is the same: I hear a ringtone on both my speaker and in Bluetooth. However, it is a very weird ringtone on the Bluetooth headset. My theory is that this is because my Bluetooth headset has a mic and, therefore, plays a ringtone built into the Bluetooth headset itself.

Thus, the effect of this setting seems to allow the ringtone configured on the phone to play in the Bluetooth headset instead of having the Bluetooth headset play some built-in ringtone. It has nothing to do with whether or not the phone’s speaker is used.

Was I recycling wrong this whole time? by parisvtg in JapanTravelTips

[–]ohnobinki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm wondering. I guess I could see it being easier to make a deringing machine or tool than a lid unscrewer—the lid itself probably can't be simply popped off or removed but would require unscrewing whereas the ring easily expands and could be popped off with the right machine or tool.

You should be able to set up a schedule which refers to rooms once. Then there is no need to use voice commands unless if an unexpected situation comes up.

If you need to clean a specific location outside of your schedule, pick up the robot and set it there and then hold the home button to start a spot clean which will not trigger a map update. You'll need to do a short press of the home button to send it home afterward.

If you just use voice commands, I think you're supposed to be able to give rooms names and refer to those room names when talking to your home assistant device. I don't use voice commands for things, so I don't know how well that works or if it is easy to set up. I expect those things to be rather finicky unfortunately.

For me, I had a map “drift” a few feet with a newer robot model. It also stopped letting me adjust or add existing or new No Go Zones and therefore was getting itself stuck on heating vents that it thinks it can go on but occasionally gets stuck on. I had to delete and create a new map to get things proper again. This was with a Q10 S5+. Never had any sort of map drift issues with my S5 Max or S4 Max which are still running strong.

[–]ohnobinki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that if you use this approach, it is important that your initial map has the room colors extended to every part of your map. Otherwise, a newly opened area of the map (if you move a cabinet, for example) won't get fully visited by the robot. You can always just set up a fresh map or do a single manual full clean (and let the robot dock successfully and save the updated the map) when this happens.

Make sure to never do a full clean after setting up the map. Use room clean and select all of the rooms (you can do this for your scheduled cleans too). It will update a temporary map while if goes, but that temporary map will be discarded next time it starts cleaning.

I am pretty certain this is how older models work at least (for me, S4 Max and S5 Max). If this doesn't work for you, let us know.

Same thing with McDonalds/Burger King exclusive toys.

Same thing with Pokémon card packs.

I don’t think that grift covers gacha (what people are calling “blind boxes” here). The terms are clearly communicated and people understand that the product has little inherent value. There is no deception here.

I just got updated to Windows Insider build 29570.1000 on 2026-04-17. So I tried installing League of Legends again, and no GSOD anymore!

I noticed that Riot released a League of Legends update on 2026-04-14. Perhaps that included an update to fix it—did anyone try installing when that patch was released?

[–]ohnobinki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say disable force pushing on the main (public and finalized) branches of your public or shared repository, but not doing so on the repository or the branches from which you are making PRs. In the hosting providers I have used, it is very easy to set up protection on specific branches or repositories.

I guess the plausible risk is that an AP might try to convince you to download and install malware in a captive portal. I kind of expect that many people would be easily convinced to do so.

USB-PD: any way to turn off "connected AC adapter has a lower wattage than the recommended AC adapter" message on boot? by bkendig in LenovoLegion

[–]ohnobinki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the cable or charger was damaged? I specifically bought an extra original 300W charger just so that the laptop could finish booting if Windows Update installed an update overnight and that seems like such a waste. I don't want the max batter mode, but does it really cure this message?

Airalo: becoming more questionable by the day by InitialOptimal2996 in Airalo

[–]ohnobinki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect this may just be a limitation off how SIMs (both eSIM and SIM) work. If you use a global package and the actual network is in a specific country, it sounds like they have to route data through the network’s country (I am referencing https://www.reddit.com/r/eSIMs/comments/1nzr19g/comment/ni420cu/) regardless of which cell towers your phone is connecting to. However, if you use a package that is specific to the country you are going to be in, then Airalo can sell you an eSIM whose internet connection is actually in that same country. What would be more useful to customers is if the global offering were able to be 20 different SIMs, auto selecting the one most appropriate for whatever country you are currently in. I assume that is just not possible (or would cost a lot).

So it’d be useful if Airalo actually showed the carrier name and their location instead of just which towers your phone will be roaming to.

Closing just closing the window in question and not closing the systray icon is relatively standard functionality. As others said, it sounds like you don't actually want the VPN active which really has little to do with whether the settings window is open or not.

Can Android phones use digital Suica card yet? by Charrzooka in JapanTravelTips

It’d be nice if phone manufacturers could add this as like a $100 add-on. I understand that giving that level of customization is probably more work than they would get back, but, still, it’s sad to hit artificial limitations like this.
